The Northern Renaissance Chapter 17 Section B The Northern Renaissance

By the late 1400s, Renaissance ideas had spread to Northern Europe-especially England, Germany, and Flanders. These ideas spread by trade. The spread of the Renaissance northward occurred as Northern Europe recovered from the plague & The Hundred Years’ War ended (1453). Francis I of France and other monarchs helped royal courts play a major role in introducing Renaissance styles to Northern Europe. Humanist in Northern Europe were more interested in religious ideas than secular themes.

German Painters Albrecht Durer was the most famous German painter of this time period.

Hans Holbein the Younger-his paintings are almost photographic in detail.

Flemish Painters Jan van Eyck developed oil paintings that are still used today.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder-He was interested in realistic details and individual people. His paintings also protested harsh Spanish rule over his country.

Northern Writers Desiderius Erasmus-Best known of the Christian Humanist. He wrote The Praise of Folly. It pokes fun at greedy merchants, heartsick lovers, quarrelsome scholars, and pompous priest.

Effects of the Printing Press The printing press will make books cheap enough that many people could buy them. Because of the printing press new ideas will be spread quicker than ever before. It will cause the literacy rate to rise. Because Bibles will be printed in the vernacular people will begin reading them for themselves and demanding religious reform.
