Latitude and Longitude. Relative Location Relative location is the proximity of a location in relation to another point of interest. It is about where.
 The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.
 Learn about some of the elements of a map. You will be able to identify and define the following elements: Longitude Latitude Prime Meridian Equator.
Aim: How do we use latitude and longitude to find locations?  Topic: Unit 1  Main Idea: Latitude and Longitude.

Finding Latitude and Longitude

Latitude Lines of latitude run horizontally. Lines of latitude are labeled either North or South depending on their relation to the Equator which is at 0°. If your location is above the Equator it is labeled North. If your location is below the Equator is labeled South.

Lines of latitude

Longitude Lines of longitude run vertically. Lines of longitude are labeled either East or West depending on their relation to the Prime Meridian which is at 0°. If your location is to the right of the Prime Meridian it is labeled East. If your location is to the left of the Prime Meridian it is labeled West.

Lines of longitude

Absolute Location The definitive location of a place using a recognized coordinate system. For example, in terms of latitude and longitude, Galveston, Texas is located at 29 degrees 16’ North, 94 degrees 49’ West The definitive location of a place using a recognized coordinate system. For example, in terms of latitude and longitude, Galveston, Texas is located at 29 degrees 16’ North, 94 degrees 49’ West

Relative Location Relative location of a city or destination on the planet is its relationship to another place or nearby landmarks. For example, West Seneca is in Western New York and is a suburb of Buffalo.
