OBJECTIVES To explore post high school options. Students will understand the criteria colleges use for admission Students will understand the parts of a college application Students will explore factors they should consider when selecting a college Students will learn about the transcript process Students will complete college knowledge survey Students will complete end of the year survey

POST HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS

WHAT CRITERIA STUDENTS USE Size Location  Distance from home  Location of campus (suburb, city, rural) Academic programs Special programs Cost Reputation Dorms, food, culture of campus Extra Curricular Activities i.e. athletics, theater, music, art

WHAT’S IMPORTANT?

PARTS OF A COLLEGE APPLICATION The Application Form: Most applications can be found online but it may be possible to request a hard copy. Many colleges also accept The Common Application. No matter what school or what application, these will be important components:  Personal and Educational Info (name, address, phone number, , citizenship and residency information, high schools you have attended, college credits you have earned, parental information, senior year schedule, standardized test scores)  Honors and Awards  Activities: Extracurricular, Personal, and Volunteer  Employment, Internships, and Summer Activities (You may be able to submit a resume in addition to the activity section of the application.)

PARTS OF A COLLEGE APPLICATION The Application Form continued:  Essays, short answer and/or a longer personal essay  Disciplinary information  Application Fee  Signature For certain majors, you may be required to audition or have to submit a portfolio. A complete application also includes transcripts, recommendations, test scores, school profile, and often a mid year report.
