Module 7 Exercise Intersection & Interchange Geometrics (IIG) Innovative Design Considerations for All Users

APPLICATION EXERCISE In teams, participants will discuss potential applications of alternative designs at the following three intersections: 1.US Rural expressway 2.SR 7 - Arterial in developing suburb 3.US Urban arterial

US 151 SCENARIO 1 RURAL FOUR LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY

US-151 & Springville Rd.

FAR SIDE ANGLE COLLISIONS

SR 7 SCENARIO 2 SUBURBAN HIGH VOLUME ARTERIAL

SR 7 at Berry Hill Road

CONTEXT AND CONDITIONS  Rapidly developing suburban land use  Commercial on north side  Residential / mixed-use on south side  Currently STOP control at both minor road approaches  Heavy through volumes on arterial  45 mph posted speed – higher operating speeds Residents and businesses are complaining about delay waiting to turn out from minor roads – they want a signal!

US 167 SCENARIO 3 URBAN HIGH VOLUME ARTERIAL

KEY CONSIDERATIONS TO DISCUSS  Applicability Characteristics  Operational Benefits/Disadvantages  Safety Benefits/Disadvantages  Pedestrian Accommodation  ROW Constraints & Access Issues
