Read carefully and answer the questions LESSON 1: COMMUNITY NEW YORK CITY

New York City Over time, New York City has grown and grown and it has become a great metropolis. I'd like to live in a busy city like that! A city has many neighborhoods. A neighborhood is where people live, work and help each other. A group of neighborhoods is a community. To make a community work, the people who live there must agree to respect the laws of the community. For example, a law in New York says that people cannot talk on their cell phones while they are driving their cars. When we follow the laws, everything works better. Many people live in the large buildings in the urban area of the city. That is why we see so many people walking through the streets. Others live in communities near the city; these communities are called suburbs. In the suburbs, there is more peace of mind.

The small towns that are away from the city are known as rural areas. Fewer people live in the rural areas and their houses are separated from one another because each home is on a large piece of land. Most people use their land for farming and raising livestock. There are people in every community who provide services to the residents. In communities, firefighters can help people when there are fires or floods. You can also find police officers, teachers, doctors, and librarians who provide many other kinds of services. They work in schools, hospitals, libraries, and police stations. BACK
