MOTIVATION FOR ESTABLISHING THE CENTRE University of Port Harcourt is among 18 other African Universities that won the World Bank grant to establish African Centre of Excellence.  Locally, sourced cost-effective OILFIELD CHEMICALS are required for drilling, well completion, and achieving optimum oil recovery.  Currently, several billions of dollars are spent, annually, importing these chemicals in the Gulf of Guinea for petroleum exploitation.  Yet, numerous natural resources can be, successfully, processed and used for these operations.  Nigeria and other African countries have abundant supplies of these resources.  Developing technologies for in-country production of oilfield chemicals will improve profit margin, build human capacity and create jobs. 3
