 Calvin Coolidge succeeded Harding in the presidency and was very different from him  Where Harding was genial, garrulous and debauched, Coolidge was dour and puritanical.  Held the conviction that government should interfere as little as possible in the life of the nation.  Was not very active as president

 During the 1920’s, much of the federal government worked effectively and efficiently.  There was a close relationship between the private sector and the federal government that had been forged during WWI.  Taxes on corporate profits, personal incomes, and inheritances were all cut by more than 50%.  The most prominent member of the cabinet was Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover.  Hoover was a progressive that went on to become president in Despite his previous economic success, the nation suffered one of its worst economic crises in history which led to unprecedented social innovation and reform.
