Before the Spanish Civil War 1923 – 1930 Dictator Miguel Primo leads Spain with the support of King Alfonso XIII. With the rise of liberal and socialist groups, support of the monarchy steadily decreased. This forces Alfonso to allow free elections (Republicans win). King Alfonso leaves the country, however refuses to give up his line to the throne.

Continued socialists and leftwing republicans lead Spain New government made mass reforms including workers rights, controversial military changes, and reducing the influence of theRoman Catholic church. These reforms create a strong opposition Conservatives win the 1933 election This new government proceeds to undo all reforms

The Civil War Between Republicans (Spanish loyalists) (left-wing)  ”Red Terror” and the Nationalists (anti- communism)  ”White Terror” Attempted coup d'état which started the war - Republicans reacted to the attempted coup by arresting and executing actual and perceived Nationalists The League of Nations' reaction to what was happening during the war was mostly neutral and insufficient Both Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, sent troops, aircraft, tanks, and other weapons to support Franco. The Nationalist side conducted aerial bombing of cities in the Republican territory and executed teachers and anyone who was thought to promote communism Republicans attacked churches and monasteries and killed priests, nuns and bishops. Children were sent to European countries and Mexico. Republicans (leftists) shooting at a statue of Jesus Christ

After the Spanish Civil War

Continued 500,000 deaths from the Spanish Civil war in total An estimated 200,000 died from combat-related causes. 110,000 fought for the Republicans and 90,000 for the Nationalists. This shows that out of all the people who fought in the war 10% of all thesoldiers who fought in the war were killed. After the war the government of General Francisco Franco arranged theexecutions of 100,000 Republican prisoners. After the execution of around 35,000. Republicans died in concentrationcamps in the years that followed the war.
