The central part of Chuvashia is the Sviyazhskya -Plain with wide, but not deep valleys and gorges, is indented to a lesser degree. Forests cover about one third of the Republic's territory, mainly along the Sura river and in Zavolzhye. In other locations there are only groves, in the south-east there are almost no forests at all. The forests of Chuvashia are mountainous oak-groves of the Ovrazhnoye plateau, mixed forests oi Prisurye, pine forests of Zavolzhye. Typical representatives of the local fauna are elks, bears, wolves, wild boars, hares, foxes, martens, otters.
