 What did people use before the light bulb? What did people use before the light bulb?  What was the reason for inventing the light bulb? What was the reason for inventing the light bulb?  What is today’s most common light bulb? What is today’s most common light bulb?  Conclusion Conclusion  Bibliography Bibliography

 Before the light bulb people used fire places to light up the night.  People also used candles, but you needed many candles to light up a huge room.

 Gas and oil lamps were also used at night.  In the early 1800s, people began to use gas lamps.  Both lamps and the candles had open flames and were dangerous, so people had to be very careful.  Whale oil was also used because it wasn’t as dirty as the other lamps, but it was too expensive. Gas LampOil Lamp

 The reason for inventing the light bulb was to find an easy and cheap way to get light after the sun set.  Before Thomas Edison built the working light bulb many scientists and inventors tried to build a light bulb, but the ones that almost worked had problems.

 On October 1879, Thomas Edison and his helpers put a carbonized cotton thread in a light bulb.  The thread glowed for more than 13 hours.  Besides the light bulb Edison has also invented other machines like the movie projector.

 Since the first light bulb, over time it has been improved.  Today the most common light bulbs are the incandescent, halogen, and fluorescent light bulbs.

Name: How Long it Lasts: Information About the Light Bulb: Incandescent 1,000Hours These are traditional light bulbs like the one Edison invented. Halogen 3,500Hours These contain halogen gas that make it glow longer. Fluorescent 10,000Hours These work by passing electricity through a tube filled with mercury and argon gas.

 Light bulbs have been used for more than 100 years.  The light Bulb is very interesting because it has been used and improved since  The light bulb helps us see after the sun sets, so what would we be without the light bulb?
