Creating and Speaking from a Presentation Steven Reid 1

Creating and Speaking from a Presentation Purpose of Powerpoint Creating a Powerpoint Speaking from a Powerpoint 2

The Purpose of a Presentation A presentation is about communication What message do you want your audience to leave with? 3

The Purpose of a Presentation PowerPoint is a tool to ASSIST you, not do the work for you. The audience came to hear you 4

The Purpose of a Presentation Use the slides to REINFORCE what your saying, not repeat it Don’t make PowerPoint do all the work 5

Creating a PowerPoint LESS IS MORE! 6

Creating a Powerpoint Create a logical flow of ideas Think of your presentation as a story 7

Creating a Powerpoint Avoid templates Don’t give your presentation a generic look 8

Creating a Powerpoint Choose color carefully Bad combinations of colors can make your presentation difficult to read 9

Creating a Powerpoint No more than 20 words on a slide Never include long paragraphs in a presentation. The audience will not want to read all the information you have on a slide. Also if they are spending all that time reading your slides, they are probably not listening to you. Remember, they came to hear you speak, not read your presentation. 10

Creating a Powerpoint Make sure you use a readable font Just because a font is pretty, doesn’t mean it’s right for your presentation. 11

Creating a Powerpoint Choose an appropriate size for your fonts The guy in the back row needs to be able to read it too. 12

Creating a Powerpoint Quality, audience appropriate pictures only Choose striking images that show the emotion of your presentation 13

Creating a Powerpoint Use charts and graphs to show RELEVANT information Spreadsheets and lists of data should not be included or used carefully 14

Creating a Powerpoint Limited, or better yet, no animations WOW Sensory Overload What is going on here? Animation is fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 15

Creating a Powerpoint Limited or no sound effects. 16

Speaking from a Powerpoint Make yourself cue cards 17

Speaking from a Powerpoint Do not read from screen 18

Speaking from a Powerpoint Practice beforehand 19

Speaking from a Powerpoint Give them a written copy AFTER you've spoken (not before) You want the audience listening to YOU, not reading ahead. 20

Speaking from a Powerpoint Don’t let this happen to you! 21
