Values, Goals & Attitudes Chapter 3

3.1 Values Values – cherished ideas and beliefs What values do you have? Do you have strong feelings about this belief? Is it strong enough to withstand pressure from others to change? Do you cherish the belief? Are others aware of your belief?

3.1 Values VALUES may include: Protecting the environment Helping senior citizens Discovering new ways to do things Beautifying your world Being a dedicated friend Being a role model for your siblings Striving to be the best student you can be

3.1 Values WORK VALUES Security – having job security Knowledge – working with information Family relationships – would you relocate? Independence Money – earn the most or be satisfied with average Religion – can you work there if company conflicts w/it? Leadership – do you enjoy making decisions? Social Relationship – Is it important to work with people?

3.2 Goals Goal - an aim or objective Materialistic goal – one that has monetary worth Materialistic goals are tangible – (touchable) Non-Materialistic goal – provides inner satisfaction Such as helping others, cleaning the environment Goals give you confidence & boost self-esteem! But they must be REALISTIC – (obtainable)

3.2 Goals Steps to Achieve Goals 1. Set your own goals (those important to you) 2. Base your goals on important values 3. Make the meaning of your goals clear. Write them out. 4. Separate general goals into simple parts 5. Make sure each goal has a clear objective 6. Make sure that each goal is possible (what obstacles?) 7. Determine the time/energy you are willing to invest 8. Develop a plan of action for reaching each goal 9. Review your written goals frequently!

3.2 Goals Career Goals When planning your career goals it is best to start a timeline (schedule) for each goal or part of a goal. Write a mission statement (broad & specific statement used to define an company and inspire those who are a part of it) Break your goals into short-term and long-term to help eliminate frustration. “Winners never quit and quitters never win”

3.3 Attitudes Attitude – the way you think about things and act towards others Attitudes are displayed in both positive and native responses to other people’s feelings, thoughts & beliefs. Components - parts Stereotype – strong attitude (or general opinion) about a group of people that may or may not be true but may change if provided new information Prejudice – an attitude that refuses to change regardless of new contradictory information/experiences Contradictory – showing an opposite point of view

3.3 Attitudes Attitudes about Yourself You may not always think good things about yourself and others, which leads to two problems: Preconceived beliefs – opinions formed beforehand Too often preconceived beliefs drive our movements/attitudes Self-Fulfilling prophesy – when a strongly perceived belief/opinion becomes fact simply because you believe it1d
