AEGIS 2008 Annual Assembly 11 December 2008 PROPEL – Asteroid proper elements Bojan Novaković and Zoran Knežević Astronomical Observatory Belgrade Serbia

A E G I S 11 December 2008 PROPEL – Asteroid proper elements Proper elements are quasi integrals of N-body equations of motion. They are nearly constant in time and represent average characteristics of motion over very long time spans, up to hundreds of millions of years. They are used to:  study long term dynamical evolution of asteroids  study evolution of the asteroid belt through their classification into the collisional families  assess the stability of their motion  identify transport mechanisms at work in the Solar system.

A E G I S 11 December 2008 Importance of Grid for PROPEL Why grid makes a difference for PROPEL?  Computation of asteroid proper elements requires numerical integrations of thousands of orbits over time spans on the order of millions of years. This is computationally complex, CPU intensive and time consuming procedure. Since it can be simply parallelized by grouping similar orbits into independent batches, it is perfectly suitable for the grid.  The need to speed up the time consuming computations and make them more efficient is justified by the large increase of observational data expected from the next generation all sky surveys.

A E G I S 11 December 2008 Gridification topics  Software Installation Management  Running Jobs  Data Management  Data Access  Application-Level Monitoring  Benchmarking  Installation of appropriate FORTRAN compiler  Optimisation for platforms based on both AMD and Intel Processors  Preparation of SEE-GRID-2 wiki pages about Software installation management Execution and data collecting automation  Launching of PROPEL web site
