 Written during the first part of the seventeenth century (probably in 1600 or 1601),  Hamlet was probably first performed in July  It was first published in printed form in 1603 and appeared in an enlarged edition in 1604

Setting The story takes place in the country of Denmark in the late medieval period.

The Story O If this were an action-movie, Hamlet might be entirely sympathetic, and his enemies altogether despicable; O he begins the play with a nasty, bitter outlook on life. Today's teenaged goth culture (wearing black, being clever and disrespectful, playing with people's feelings, complaining that life seems meaningless and empty), you may not like the Hamlet whom we meet at the beginning. O The audience comes away from Hamlet liking the prince very much. He is a thinker, and he is funny. We see into his own mind and discover him to be genuine and sincere

Relating to Hamlet To connect to the play, cross out your father's name. He just died. Draw a line connecting your mother's name to your uncle's. A month has passed. Your mother has just married your uncle. The issue of Gertrude's marriage to Hamlet's uncle surfaces immediately in the first words Hamlet speaks in the play: “A little more than kin and less than kind” (1.2.67). Notice whether Claudius and Gertrude's marriage was politically or romantically motivated and whether Gertrude played a part in the death of King Hamlet.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

The Prince of Denmark, the title character, and the protagonist. About thirty years old at the start of the play, Hamlet is the son of Queen Gertrude and the late King Hamlet, and the nephew of the present king, Claudius. Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his uncle's scheming and disgust for his mother's sexuality. A reflective and thoughtful young man. Hamlet is sometimes indecisive and hesitant, but at other times prone to rash and impulsive acts. HAMLET

CLAUDIUS The King of Denmark, Hamlet's uncle, and the play's antagonist. The villain of the play Claudius is a calculating, ambitious politician, driven by his sexual appetites and his lust for power, but he occasionally shows signs of guilt and human feeling—his love for Gertrude, for instance, seems sincere.

GERTRUDE The Queen of Denmark, Hamlet's mother, recently married to Claudius. Gertrude loves Hamlet deeply, but she is a shallow, weak woman who seeks affection and status more urgently than moral rectitude or truth.

POLONIUS The Lord Chamberlain of Claudius's court, a pompous, conniving old man. Polonius is the father of Laertes and Ophelia.

HORATIO Hamlet's close friend, who studied with the prince at the university in Wittenberg. Horatio is loyal and helpful to Hamlet throughout the play. After Hamlet's death, Horatio remains alive to tell Hamlet's story.

OPHELIA Polonius's daughter, a beautiful young woman with whom Hamlet has been in love. Ophelia is a sweet and innocent young girl, who obeys her father and her brother, Laertes. Dependent on men to tell her how to behave, she gives in to Polonius's schemes to spy on Hamlet. Even in her lapse into madness and death, she remains maidenly, singing songs about flowers and finally drowning in the river amid the flower garlands she had gathered.

LAERTES Polonius's son and Ophelia's brother, a young man who spends much of the play in France. Passionate and quick to action, Laertes is clearly a foil for the reflective Hamlet.

THE GHOST The specter of Hamlet's recently deceased father. The ghost, who claims to have been murdered by Claudius, calls upon Hamlet to avenge him. It is not entirely certain whether the ghost is what it appears to be, or whether it is something else. Hamlet speculates that the ghost might be a devil sent to deceive him and tempt him into murder, and the question of what the ghost is or where it comes from is never definitively resolved.

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN Two slightly bumbling courtiers, former friends of Hamlet from Wittenberg, who are summoned by Claudius and Gertrude to discover the cause of Hamlet's strange behavior.

“To be or not to be” In his famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy, Hamlet philosophically concludes that no one would choose to endure the pain of life if he or she were not afraid of what will come after death, and that it is this fear which causes complex moral considerations to interfere with the capacity for action.

Since death is both the cause and the consequence of revenge, it is intimately tied to the theme of revenge and justice Claudius's murder of King Hamlet initiates Hamlet's quest for revenge, and Claudius's death is the end of that quest REVENGE

EDGAR ALLEN POE’S DEFINITION OF REAL REVENGE In his famous short story “The Cask of Amontillado” Poe’s main character, Montresor, claims that in order to get “real” revenge, one must fulfill 3 criteria. One must make oneself known as an avenger on the revengee. One must punish and get away with it. One must NEVER feel guilty about what they have done to get revenge. Only then has one TRULY gotten revenge.

Certainty  Hamlet as a play about indecisiveness, and thus about Hamlet's failure to act appropriately  Is the ghost what it appears to be, or is it really a misleading fiend?  How can we know for certain the facts about a crime that has no witnesses?  Can we trust our own judgements

Questions about Hamlet  Is Hamlet basically good or basically bad?  Is he cunning or crazy?  Is he a good son? Nephew? Friend? Boyfriend?  Is Hamlet brave or cowardly?  Is he in-the-right or in-the-wrong?  Is he all talk or is he a man of action?  These questions, and others, are left for you to decide, and in so deciding, making the play interesting.
