Presentation transcript:

“Sloth is therefore the sin of the somnambulant sinner who refuses to be forgiven, the arrogance of the believing that one is without hope or help, the despair that there is not efficacy in the church’s sacramental means of grace, the suspicion that when ` Jesus says, ‘Rise your sins are forgiven,’ Jesus is lying.” William H. Willimon

“Sloth (or acedia) is a kind of spiritual laziness (as opposed to mere physical fatigue or depression). It means not making it a priority to do what we should, or change what we should in ourselves. Some people might call it apathy, which means a lack of feeling.”

Ecclesiastes 1:14, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.”

17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.”

Revelation 2:2-5 “I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary

4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”

Psalms 42:4 NASB, “These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God, With the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.”

Revelation 2:4 “Repent and do the things you did at first.” REPENT AND DO THE THINGS YOU DID AT FIRST

Psalm 42:4 “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

Isaiah 40:31 “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Psalm 33:20 “We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.”

Psalm 62:5 “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.”

Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

Psalm Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.

3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,

5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
