Glider data management, the international level Groom is EU project for ocean observation from glider platforms. Groom WP3.2 is developing a robust data management for glider observations and metadata. Groom glider observations and metadata are preserved and distributed in a standard NetCDF time-series organized by glider-deployment. Glider NetCDF deployment files follow the CF convention. –NetCDF : the main format used by the ocean-atmosphere science community (V3.6) –CF : Climate and forecast convention (V1.6)

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 Glider data management, the international level The Groom NetCDF CF implementation is a significant effort to promote the use of glider data and metadata in ocean- atmosphere science community. The Groom NetCDF CF data and metadata format is described in the "Groom glider user's manual" available on: – gliders/EGO-Glider-data-management/A-NetCDF-implementation-for- glider-observationshttp:// gliders/EGO-Glider-data-management/A-NetCDF-implementation-for- glider-observations

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 Link with Argo data management Argo is the international program dedicated to operational ocean observations from an array of more than 3000 active profiling floats. Argo program has a strong data-management activity. Argo data and metadata are preserved and distributed in an internationally agreed NetCDF CF format described in "Argo user's manual". Groom data management is an Argo young brother in the ocean observation family.

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 Link with Argo data management The Argo and Groom NetCDF implementation share the same basic principal structures –NetCDF CF formats –A common description of parameters The parameters observed from a glider and an Argo profiling float come from the same sensors What are the differences between an Argo float NetCDF file and a Groom glider NetCDF file ? –The specialization to describe the platform behavior A glider has several deployments with distinct sensor configurations and calibrations A float is deployed once with a unique configuration and no post recovery data A glider has a much richer technical and engineering information than a float

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 International links with glider projects We developed strong links with US OOI project and Australia IMOS project In December 2013, in parallel with ODIP meeting (the EU-US- Australia Ocean Data Interoperability Project), a meeting was organized between US OOI, Australia IMOS and EU Groom data managers.

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 International links with glider projects We reviewed, compared and agreed to adopt compatible practices. –The IMOS-ANFOG glider data management manual is based on Groom data management manual. In addition to Groom manual, it incorporates features related to Australia's IMOS and ANFOG national projects. –OOI uses NetCDF CF to preserve and distribute glider observations. OOI does not have a specific and detailed data management manual for glider. The Groom-OOI-IMOS glider data managements are compatible. We work together on a common action list, to further enhance the compatibility of Groom-OOI-IMOS glider data.

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 International links with glider projects In particular –Adopt the OOI smart metadata description for gliders : a "void" variable for each system component with a series of attributes to store metadata. Components : the glider platform, each glider sensors –DOIs –Xxx –Yyy –zzz

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 Significant Results International links with glider projects We agreed that an international data management organization very close to Argo data management is the good way to go. Based on a PI – DAC – GDAC organization Groom is building the European DAC, OOI the US DAC and IMOS the Australian DAC. Further efforts are needed to build a GDAC mirrored in each continent. A GDAC would provide a global, homogeneous and continuously managed data set of glider data and metadata.

Final General Assembly – Paris, France – September 19, 2014 International links with glider projects More on international relations MEDS-Canada is following with interest the Groom-OOI-IMOS glider activity. Links with Asian colleagues (Japan, China, Korea, India) are yet to be initiated.
