Schlegel seeks to compare control of women Control of sex is most significant indicator. –But value on premarital virginity has problems as a measure of control Premarital virginity may be followed by marital promiscuity. Premarital virginity may be about control of young rather than control of females.

Value on Virginity is about Inheritance Low status males may force marriage to higher status family by impregnating girl. Family seeks groom who brings as much to the family. –Assures status of descendents As education replaces inheritance value on virginity decreases.
