A “Handful” of Mehndi 1

 Mehndi is the traditional art of Henna painting in India and the Middle-East.  This body paint is used for festive occasions, and has been used in India since the 12 th century.  It is traditionally used on women’s hands and feet.  For the most special of occasions, men get it as well. 2

4  In Indian weddings the bride, groom, and several members of the bridal party receive Mehndi designs.  The Henna symbolizes love between the husband and wife.  The groom’s name is usually hidden in the bride’s Mehndi. If he cannot find his name, it is said that the bride will have control over the relationship.  If the Mehndi is dark, it is said that the relationship will be strong and long-lasting.

7  Henna means “to become queen”.  Henna leaves are dried and finely ground and the power is sifted through fine cloth. It is then mixed with oil and other liquids to make a thick paste.  The paste is then applied to the hand in various designs. A solution of lemon juice and sugar is applied to the drying Mehndi to allow it to remain semi-permanent.

10  Mehndi takes 2-12 hours to dry.  Once it is dry, the paste is removed to reveal the design.  A Mehndi design is similar to a tattoo, but only lasts 1 to 3 weeks.  When it is wet, the dye is a deep green. Once it is dry, it varies from light orange to deep brownish-black.
