Presentation transcript:

Causes  Happens early in the cold war  Major events that occurred before: Truman Doctrine, National Security Act, Containment, Marshall Plan, Berlin Airlift and NATO  Mao Zedong creates the People’s Republic of China (October 1 st, 1949)  Communist vs. Nationalist since the early 1920s

What is it?What is it?  Civil war between Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) for control of China  China falls under communism in 1949  Mao Zedong defeats Jiang Jieshi to create PRC  One party state was created led by Mao  Reforms (medical, political and social improvements, new schools, etc.)

What Should the US Do?What Should the US Do?  Containment

How did it affect the US?How did it affect the US?  The US does not want to “lose” China to communism  US sends military and financial aid to the nationalists but it is not enough  In Oct of 1949, Zedong officially proclaimed the formation of the PRC (People’s Republic of China), which means the US “lost” China

How did it affect the US? Continued  The PRC and the US could not agree due to domestic politics and global tensions  Truman creates the “China White Paper” which stated a US policy towards China saying that only Chinese forces could determine the outcome of the civil war but this failed due to “losing” China
