The U.S. Government Addresses Suspicion The Loyalty Review Board Purpose was to investigate government employees and to dismiss those it found to be disloyal. The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) This committee focused on suspicion in and out of government Many Hollywood people. Many Hollywood employees were blacklisted and lost their careers. McCarran Act This made unlawful to plan any action that might lead to the beginning of a totalitarian dictatorship in the U.S. Truman vetoed it, Congress overrode the veto.
Communist Spies Detected in U.S. Alger Hiss Hiss was charged with perjury related to passing sensitive documents. Richard Nixon, future president, pursued the charges against him. The Rosenbergs Low level communist party members were charged with giving the Soviets information about the Atomic Bomb. They were charged and executed.
