Lend-Lease America watched as Germany carved up the world. America did not want to get involved. Congress had passed neutrality acts to keep the United States out of another war.

Lend-Lease cont. Under those acts the president would not let anybody sell weapons to any warring nations. However in 1939 Roosevelt asked for and got a new law that allowed the Allied Powers to buy arms if they paid cash and transported them on their own ships

Lend Lease cont. When Britain ran out of cash Congress authorized Roosevelt to lend or lease arms to them. After Germany turned on the Soviet Union, Roosevelt gave lend-lease aid to the Soviets as well.

Pearl Harbor Meanwhile American and Japanese relationships got worse. America stopped exporting planes aircraft parts aviation gas and metals to Japan to stop their expansion. Roosevelt also seized all Japanese property in the U.S.

Pearl Harbor cont. Needing oil badly, Japan then invaded the Dutch East Indies. The only force that could stop them was the US Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor Suddenly on Dec 7, 1941 around 8am the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor for a solid two hours. Severely damaged the navy’s fleet and over two thousand people were killed. One day later the US declared war on Japan and the US entered World War II. A few days later Germany and Italy declared war on the United States

Impact of WWII on Georgia’s economic development SS8H9 b. The student will evaluate the importance of Bell Aircraft, military bases, the Savannah and Brunswick shipyards, Richard Russell, and Carl Vinson.

Bell Aircraft After Pearl Harbor the government decided to build B-29 bombers. The Bell Aircraft Company of Buffalo, New York, won the contract and built a plant in Marietta. In spring 1943, Bell Aircraft began assembling bombers, by April 1945 they were employing 27,000 employees. The plant closed in 1945 when they closed they had built 668 planes. In 1950, the Air Force convinced Lockheed Martin Corporation to reopen the Marietta plant, the plant is still in operation today.

Military Bases What happened to Georgia’s economy after the war? Millions of federal dollars were poured into the state for military bases.  Fort Benning, Camp Gordon,Fort Stewart, Hunter Air Field and Warner Robbins.

Military Bases Fort McPherson was a major induction center for new soldiers. Fort Gillem was an army storage facility and railroad yard. Prisoners of war were held at Forts Benning,Gordon, Oglethorpe, and Stewart Cobb County Airport became the Marietta Army Airfield. The Atlanta airport became an air base in 1941.

Holocaust c. Explain the impact of the Holocaust on Georgians What was the Holocaust? Concentration camps were set up by the Nazis as the “final solution to the Jewish problem.” The Holocaust was the name given to systematic extermination of 6 million Jews. In addition 5-6 million people were labeled as ”undesirables” they were killed by the Nazis before during and after WWII.
