This book is about a family in a small town called Maycomb during the great depression. A widowed father named Atticus has two kids, Scout and Jem, Scout is the girl of the family but she is a big tomboy and gets into some trouble. They befriend a boy named Dill and he becomes really interested in a spooky house on their street. The reason they get so interested in the house is because of Boo Radley, who has lived there for years and has never gone outside. The next summer on the last day Dill is in town they venture onto the radleys property and they get shot at, as they’re running away Jem gets his pants caught on the fence and they get ripped off. Later when he went back to get them they were folded on top of the fence.

Meanwhile Atticus accepts a case which involves him defending a black man. In a racist white community everyone is mad at him for defending the black man, Tom Robinson. Tom is accused of raping a white girl, Mayella Ewelle. While she is the one that tried to seduce him everyone believes her just because she’s white and he’s black. In court Atticus does his best to defend Tom but since he’s black he was found guilty. This was very upsetting to Tom so when he tried to escape from prison they shot him and he died.

Even though Tom was found guilty Bob Ewelle, Mayella’s Father, feels like he needs to get revenge on Atticus somehow. So as Scout and Jem are walking through the woods one night Bob attacks Scout and Jem attempting to stab them when Boo Radley comes out of nowhere and stabs Bob with his own knife to protect the kids. The sheriff knows Boo killed Bob but decides not to do anything about it since he was just protecting Scout and Jem.
