HISTORY The Military School of Equitation

HISTORY The Military School of Equitation In Mafra, between 1840 and 1859, using the Royal Stables adjacent to the Palace, the Mafra Stud Farm was installed, in order to complement the Royal Herds of Alter do Chão.

HISTORY The Military School of Equitation After the assassination of King Carlos I in 1908, it became the Army Remount Reserve. In 1950 it became the Military School of Equitation.

HISTORY The Military School of Equitation Throughout the decades, 1952 to 1995, the Escola de Mafra was the only school where Monitors, Instructors or Masters of Equitation could be qualified in Portugal.

HISTORY The explosive increase in the number of civilians beginning to riding, National requirement that all Sports facilities had to have a Technically Responsible person, of Level II or above, Created a great lack of people with the correct qualifications, for the country needs.

HISTORY The Portuguese Equestrian Federation (FEP) started to take measures to regularise the training of teachers and proficient riders.

HISTORY Creating a department of equine education, to which was given the internal title of Escola Nacional de Equitação – ENE – already with the idea that it could be given autonomous jurisdiction, as soon as it became possible.

ENE Provides: The decentralisation of the places of training, leading students to attend localised Study Centres, instead of requiring them to travel great distances to attend a central facility;

Teaching Centres Are designated within the National Network of the Federated Riding Schools and selected by the ENE on the basis of the quality and dimensions of their facilities and the equestrian resources.
