Luke 19:1-10 The Zeal of Zaccheus

Zaccheus Luke 19:1–2 He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.

Zaccheus Luke 19:3 Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.

Zaccheus Luke 19:4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.

Zaccheus Luke 19:5-6 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.

Zaccheus Luke 19:7 When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

Zaccheus Luke 19:8 Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.”

Zaccheus Luke 19:9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.

Zaccheus Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:18-19 A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:18-19 A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:9 …He who has seen Me has seen the Father

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:20 “You know the commandments, ‘D O NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, D O NOT MURDER, D O NOT STEAL, D O NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, H ONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.’ ”

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:21 And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:22 When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Colossians 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:24-25 And Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! “For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Rich Young Ruler Luke 18:26-27 They who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

Rich Young Ruler vs. Zaccheus Rich Young Ruler was RESPECTED. Zaccheus was an OUTCAST. Rich Young Ruler was BOASTED. Zaccheus CONFESSED sin. Rich Young Ruler call Jesus “Good Teacher.” Zaccheus called him “Lord and Savior.” Zaccheus saw his need for a savior. Titus 3:5–7 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Conclusion Can you see your need for a savior? Zaccheus’ zeal after meeting the Savior. Revelation 3:20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 2 Corinthians 5:14–15 For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
