What is an apostrophe? Apostrophes are punctuation marks. In English we use them in two ways, to show possession and to show contraction (or omission).

What is an apostrophe for contraction? It looks like a comma but we place it above the line of writing. It takes up the space of an omitted letter. It ‘contracts’ two words into one.

Apostrophes for contractions are used… When two words are joined together in a shorter form. The apostrophe takes the place of the missing letter(s): –I am (I ’ m) –They are (They ’ re) –Do not (Don ’ t)

Assess Yourself Where should the apostrophe go? Why? The cats didnt like the snake. Shes got her mothers good looks, hasnt she? Its his birthday today, isnt it?

Home Learning 1.Complete the tasks on the sheet and write neatly in your Home learning Book when it says so. 2. Extension: Apostrophes are also used for possession. e.g. The man’s tie was pink. Sally’s leg was broken. Find examples of these in your reading book.

Extension… Apostrophes are often misplaced. (Used incorrectly) Here are some examples: There were lot’s of sweets in the tin. The elephant’s were bathing in the river. Teacher’s drink too many cups of tea! Why are these incorrect? (answer on next slide)

Answer… It is because they are plurals. The ‘s’ is at the end of each word to show there is more than one! Try not to make this mistake. Think before you use an apostrophe!
