Looking at Art Year 7, Term 1, Weeks

About this unit Art is all around us! Can you think of some places where you have seen art before? ‘Looking at Art’ will teach you essential skills that you will use for the rest of your time at TES – you can use these skills in other subjects too! Looking at Art will teach you how to use the resources around you, and how to create exciting artwork based on what you discover!

You will be….. Learning about lots of different Artists and different genres of Art. Learning how to research and organise your work. Learning how to use a sketchbook and present your work effectively. Learning how to use lots of different materials Learning how to talk about Art.

Search for the ‘Mona Lisa’ What images appear? Can you spot any problems? How can we make sure we are searching correctly?

Using the internet Bad Along with all the good stuff, there is also a lot of bad and inaccurate information on the internet. Finding images on Google image search often brings up images that fans have made, not the real thing! Using websites like Ask.com or Yahoo answers is very risky! Getting all your information from Wikipedia is boring! Its ok for the facts, but what if you want to know more!?

Using the internet Good There is information about almost every Artist, Art movement, painting, drawing, design, sculpture – famous artists, amateur artists – there has never been such amazing access to Art! Other resources that can help artists – for example images of animals, buildings, landscapes etc As more information gets put online, resources get even better – now we can even walk around art galleries and museums!

nstitute/project/art-project A thousand years ago, most people never saw an image. People who lived in a town might have seen art in their local church or temple but only the very wealthy could own images. In the sixteenth century, Henry VIII sent the painter Hans Holbein across the channel so he could see what a woman he was considering for marriage looked like. The Google Art Project attempts to provide more access to Museums and works of Art. The Google Art Project is an initiative to provide thousands of high quality, high resolution images from museums across the globe in one place, making art’s history, meaning and beauty available in ways never possible before. Type ‘Starry Night’ into the search bar. Zoom in! what do you see?

Task 1 Search for the artist Keith Haring Click on the yellow ‘street view man’ Use the zoom function to explore the painting – draw 3 different things that you can see in the picture Search the Art work – The Tower of Babel. What is happening in this picture? Zoom into the tower. Draw some of the people with coloured pencils Who is it by? Use the internet to find more pictures by this artist.

Task 2 Keep open all your pages Now search for Keith Haring dancing men on google image search Can you find an image here that you think isnt by Keith Haring? Save the images you like for your sketchbook Draw your own dancer! Look at the shapes…what kind of dance move will your dancer do? Think about the different pictures by Keith Haring that you have been looking at….are there some things that are the same in all of them? What are they? Using colored paper make a big version of your dancer, cut it out carefully!
