Human Body Earth’s Crust

Living and non-living things have different make-ups and need. Why do you think the elements most common in the human body are not the same as the elements most common in the Earth’s crust? Living and non-living things have different make-ups and need.

What are the rules for writing chemical symbols? The first letter in a symbol always begins with a capital letter. If the symbol is composed of two or three letters, the second and third letters are written in lower case. Letters are always printed, not written in cursive.

Be sure you know the 6 elements that are found in all living things. SPONCH S Sulfur P Phosphorus O Oxygen N Nitrogen C Carbon H Hydrogen

What is an element? An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. It contains only one type of atom. The use of symbols on the periodic table is to represent the elements that make up all matter.

Copper = Cu Iron = Fe

NaCl Compound – Any substance made by chemically combining Salt = Sodium Chloride Why isn’t NaCl on the periodic table? Compound – Any substance made by chemically combining 2 or more elements.

Photosynthesis Which of the substances involved in photosynthesis are elements? Which of the substances are compounds? Which of the substances are molecules?

Cellular Respiration Which of the substances involved in Cellular respiration are elements? Which of the substances are compounds? Which of the substances are molecules?

How are the processes similar?

What are Organic Compounds? An organic compound is made up of carbon atoms bonded to atoms of hydrogen, producing hydrocarbons. (C-H) These hydrocarbons are then bonded with other elements. Examples are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.

All organic compounds share similar characteristics All organic compounds share similar characteristics. The most obvious similarity is that they all contain the "amazing element" - carbon. Most also contain hydrogen and oxygen as well. It is important to note that while all organic compounds contain carbon, not all carbon compounds are organic. Carbon dioxide is a compound that contains carbon and oxygen. However, carbon dioxide is not an organic compound. It is an inorganic compound.
