Integrating information towards Digital ATM User Perspective Presented By: Michael Riegler Date:August 27, 2013

1 QANTAS Flight Operations Global Network. Mix of short, medium and long haul. Mix of Boeing and Airbus fleet – B737, B767, B747, A330, A380. Maintain aeronautical information “in-house”. Use ARINC 424 navigation data. Maintain a suite of AIP publications that support our global network. AFTN feed of dynamic aeronautical data from Airservices Australia.

The Airline Perspective - Roadmap Timing is perfect as QANTAS embark on flight planning system replacement. Design considerations include adoption of new standards where possible. Looking to design a system that allows QANTAS to take advantage of the benefits and “future proof” our system for global data changes.

The Airline Perspective – Potential Benefits Rich static aeronautical data incorporating ARINC 424, AIP plus company extensions delivers a clean interface and a single point of truth for aeronautical data. Structured formats support automated processing reducing the need for manual intervention.

The Airline Perspective – Potential Benefits Dynamic data cross referencing static data provides enhanced presentation delivering greater situational awareness. Rich structured format for internal system transfer of flight information provide enhanced information sharing. Extensive temporal model provides analytical benefits.

The Airline Perspective – Potential Benefits Temporal structure enables greater awareness of future data changes which enhances data management capabilities. Structured NOTAM enables better filtering and therefore presentation of data relevant to a particular flight and its position in time and space.

The Airline Perspective - Challenges Obtaining a global source of AIXM data. Converting ARINC 424 to AIXM has its own challenges, how is a UUID assigned during the conversion process? Vendor database structures may vary, data loading validation checks required. Size of the data model means manual validation impossible, we require automated data validation tools.

The Airline Perspective - Challenges To take advantage of the rich data structure manually entered and maintained supplementary data will be required AIXM has been modelled on ANSP business process and data requirements, until the airline data modelling process is complete there exists unknown extension requirements.

The Airline Perspective - Challenges GRID MORA not supported, what terrain data do we use? The more we look at the AIXM model the more we find places for our specific data elements. For example: mapping airport usage categories by aircraft type for different calculations; ETOPS, alternate and landing.
