Introduction to Stimulus Response Question (SRQ) Format & Structure

What is SRQ? It is a new component that will replace the functional writing in paper 1. The stimulus will be taken from the newspapers, magazines or journals Duration: 45 minutes

What is SRQ? SRQ requires the student to identify the purpose of the writer and to identify his supporting arguments which the students are to evaluate for their effectiveness and persuasiveness.

Using Paul’s Wheel of Reasoning Use Paul’s Wheel of Reasoning to guide you to read the article critically. This is an important step that you must take before you embark on writing your SRQ.

SRQ: Step-by-Step Write an introduction that sums up the purpose of the article 3 body paragraphs using the same structure Argument (A) – identify the writer’s argument Evaluate (EV)– Evaluate the strength/weakness of the writer’s argument Explanation (EX)–Explain (in detail) why you agree or disagree with the writer’s argument Example (E.g.) – Cite an example to clarify or affirm your explanation Conclude by summing up why you agree or disagree with the writer’s views.

Let’s do SRQ Use Paul’s Wheel of Reasoning to read critically the article on ‘Creativity’. Share with your partner your responses that you have written down in your Paul’s Wheel of Reasoning template.
