DESIRED MUTANT POWER?

SPIRITUALITY IN HEALTHCARE The role of spirituality in healthcare is controversial. Many healthcare professionals are uncomfortable dealing with other people's spirituality or feel that it is not part of their role as a health provider. University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing

SPIRITUALITY IN HEALTHCARE However, professional healthcare associations recommend that physicians and nurses consider patient spirituality, including the: 1)American Nursing Association (ANA) 2)American Psychiatric Association (APA) 3)Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) In addition, a consensus panel of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine created a spiritual history tool that they recommend physicians use with patients who have serious illnesses University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing

Position: University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing Respecting the Constitution of the United States of America that provides for religious freedom under the Bill of Rights, we have assiduously avoided advocating for particular faith traditions or spiritual practices in this module. However, we do believe that it is important to consider spirituality in healthcare. Further we feel that providers should know how to identify spiritual issues that may impact clinical care and how to refer patients.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF: SPIRITUALITY?

WHAT IS SPIRITUALITY? American Heritage definition: "Spirituality is the state of, quality, manner or fact of being spiritual; having the nature of spirit, not tangible or material.” * The word spirituality comes from root-words in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek that all mean wind, breath, or air--that which gives life * University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing

WORKING DEFINITION Spirituality is embracing, celebrating, and voicing all the connections with the ultimate/mystery/divine, within me and beyond me, in experiences that give me meaning, purpose, direction, and values for my daily journey. Spirituality exists in our connection to other humans, our environment and the unfolding universe beyond, and the transcendent. University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing

SPIRITUALITY & HEALTH: EVIDENCE The MANTRA project, a clinical trial of cardiac patients at Duke University, is demonstrating the positive impact of prayer on patient outcomes, such as fewer complications, less medication needed, and quicker return to health (Krucoff, 2000). Double-blind study by Randolph Byrd in 1979 demonstrated positive health outcomes for cardiac patients randomly assigned to a prayer intervention. The vast majority of cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies found better health outcomes over time for those who had a religious or spiritual practice compared to controls.
