Biblical Revelation Reflecting God’s Glory through Worship Kingdom of God Jesus Holy Spirit Church Shalom Return of Christ Motifs in Mission Theology

Motif 1: The Kingdom of God What is the Kingdom of God? What is the relationship of mission to the Kingdom? How does Kingdom thinking frame our approach to mission?

What is the Kingdom of God? Paradoxes that describe the Kingdom: –It is in the world, but not of it (John 18:36). –It belongs to the little ones, but those in it are greater than the greatest ones (Matt. 11:11; 18:1-4). –It comes as a free gift, but demands all we have (Luke 12:30-33) and only the truly righteous will enter (Matt. 5:20). –It is God's very reign, but works in hidden ways (Matt. 13:33). –It is already present (Luke 17:21) and yet still coming in the future (Matt. 6:10). –It does not consist of talk (1 Cor. 4:20), but it must be proclaimed (Luke 4:43).

Mission and the Kingdom of God Mission and Kingdom are inextricably intertwined. The paradoxes of the Kingdom are the paradoxes of mission as well. –Mission is successful when God’s rules are followed, which can appear topsy-turvy even to the missionaries themselves. –Enemies of the Kingdom are not conquered by force but by loving concern. –Mission, starting small, has become a large force in today’s world. –Mission is the empowerment of the weak for tasks impossible even for the strong. –It will make its ultimate mark on the world, even if people refuse to respond to the call of Christ. –It belongs to the poor and the persecuted

Engage truth Put on Christ Strip off sin Exercise humble authority and resist The Kingdom and Spiritual Warfare: A Bird’s Eye View

We are in God’s image We have the ability to choose We provoke jealousy in Satan by virtue of who we are We were designed to connect to the one whose image we bear We must worship—either God or idols

Satan and Demons Their nature: rebellious creatures Their identity: parents of lies and murder Their goals: destruction of those made in God’s image Their limitations: imitators/discreators

Satan’s Strategies Attacking our minds through clever arguments (2 Cor. 2:10-11; 11:2- 4) Masquerading as angels or ministers of light (2 Cor. 11:14-15) though –presenting a different Jesus (2 Cor. 11:4) –or doctrine (1 Tim. 4:1-4) –and displaying counterfeit miracles, signs, and wonders (2 Thess. 2:7-11); Tempting us to meet our needs outside of God's will (1 Thess. 3:5) so that Satan can disgrace us later through revealing our pitfalls (1 Tim. 3:6-7)

Satan’s Strategies Frightening or intimidating us to keep us inactive while he goes about his business (1 Pet. 5:8) Pitting us against each other to destroy the unity we share in Christ and discredit us with the world (2 Tim. 2:24-26) Through their human agents, trying to secretly introduce destructive heresies, inventing stories to convince believers to follow them (2 Pet. 2:1-6). Through false religious experiences, such as empowering idols which are worshiped as gods (1 Cor. 10:19-21) or false ecstatic experiences (1 Cor. 12:2-3)

Two objectives: –Use culture to blind people to the truth of the Gospel –Use culture to stop believers from living as God would have them live Two strategies (under the general theme of deception): –Distorting knowledge (of God’s truths) –Distorting relationships (with God and people) Satan’s Goal in Cultures

Personal Each Other Local Church Cultural/ Systemic Cosmic Fronts of Warfare

A Kingdom System... in Relation to Spiritual Warfare God’s Kingdom System... Enable people to show that they are made in the image of God by living according to His design for the creation. We acknowledge that we are owned and seek to live controlled by the Holy Spirit. Live in line with God's kingdom ethics: harmony, love, forgiveness, salt and light, etc. Trust God for all our needs and live above our circumstances. Recognize that we are children of God and live in a way that shows the truth. Freely choose to live so as to please God. The Dominion of Darkness... Cause people to live out of harmony of the image of God by perverting ourselves through rebellion. We are demonized (controlled) by evil spirits (either in great fear or in ignorance). Live out of harmony with God's kingdom ethics, whether by bending them or outright denial of them, resulting in strife, enmity, and bitterness. Trust anyone (or anything) but God to meet our needs and/or surrender to our circumstances. Be ignorant of our heritage, consider ourselves spiritual orphans (or as Satan's children). Live in bondage to Satan and his hosts and think of it as "freedom."

The Personal Front of Spiritual Warfare: Spiritual conflict fought with spiritual weapons (2 Cor. 10:3-5) Believing the truth that God declares: –We have been given a totally new nature (2 Cor. 5:16- 17), –We were transferred to a new kingdom (Col. 1:13), and –We are seated with Christ in the heavenlies, far above all Satanic powers and principalities (Eph. 1:18-23; 2:4- 6)

The Personal Front Spiritual conflict fought with spiritual weapons (2 Cor. 10:3-5) Standing firm against Satan's attacks, –Enabled (2 Cor. 1:21) and protected by God (2 Thess. 3:3) –By putting on His armor with prayer (Eph. 6:10-18) and –Not counting our lives as important (Rev. 12:7-9).

The Personal Front Spiritual conflict fought with spiritual weapons (2 Cor. 10:3-5) Extending forgiveness to those who offend us (2 Cor. 2:10-11) and refusing to allow Satan to gain an advantage over us through anger or bitterness (Eph. 4:25-5:1)

The Personal Front Spiritual conflict fought with spiritual weapons (2 Cor. 10:3-5) Taking every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor. 10:3-6) and –Refusing to be captivated by hollow and deceptive philosophies (Col. 2:8) and thus –Avoiding being "friends with the world" (James 4:4-9) Rejoicing in and living in the light of the fact that –Death has no hold over us (1 Cor. 15:50- 58), and –We have nothing to fear from it (Heb. 2:14-15).

The Personal Front Spiritual conflict fought with spiritual weapons (2 Cor. 10:3-5) Refusing to give in to Satan's intimidating tactics, –Secure in the knowledge that he has no hold on our destiny (1 John 5:18), –That the One in us is greater than the one in the world (1 John 4:4), and –That it is through the Church that Satan will be crushed (Rom. 16:20). Being ever joyful, prayerful, and thankful (1 Thess. 5:16- 18).

Forgiving as Kingdom Living We will see the importance of forgiveness as a central category in relating to others to the extent that we see every relationship enmeshed in a war that leads to a taste of heaven or hell. Allender and Longman, Bold Love, p. 88

Growing in Forgiving Our ability to forgive is founded on our being forgiven Forgiveness is not an end in itself; it has the goals of reconciliation and communion Forgiveness is not limited to a technique or set of steps, it is a lifestyle to be developed Forgiveness is a craft requiring the discipline of developing habits and practices which reflect Godly character There is no way to bypass the struggle in developing the craft of forgiveness

Forgiveness Does Involve... Forgiveness Does NOT Involve... Forgetting what happened or Denying the truth of my hurt or Letting “time heal everything” Honestly admitting my pain Being content with asking God to help Recognizing that God does help; but I must make the choice; it is a crisis of my will Justifying or Excusing or Tolerating what happened Being strong enough to hold the offender accountable, recognizing the debt that comes with pain Agreeing to live with the consequences of another person's sin by freely choosing to release the debt and accept the pain that comes with its release Waiting until the offender apologizes or Taking revenge before you forgive The Act of Forgiving

Kingdom of God and Spiritual Warfare: Selected Missiological Issues Keep in mind false miracles, whether from sleight-of-hand or from Satanic power Seek to develop a biblical contextual theology that deals with the excluded middle Ask God to help us change our functional world view where necessary Find ways to experiment from a foundation of being grounded in the Word Facing the structures of power which dehumanize
