Motivating your child to read Cristina Parodi Araya Parent / Family Liaison San Diego County Office of Education (858)

What is reading? Language Communication Learning Knowledge

Academic success starts with reading! By reading correctly, we develop important skills such as: Correct use of the language in a conversation Listen and answer correctly, story telling read aloud Identify and connect sounds to words Correct use of new words Understanding of what has been read

How can parents support the school from home? Teaching language sounds Teaching the alphabet Reading to their children everyday Helping children write the relation between word and sound Showing their kids different ways to think/interpret what they are reading Visiting the library frequently

Link between reading and life Children start discovering that they are surrounded by words when: They are exposed to books Go to the supermarket Watch TV Through the car window In the kitchen cabinets

Link between reading and life As soon as children start learning the meaning of the words, reading becomes something stimulating and comforting. While supporting reading with games, songs, rhymes, puzzles and riddles; parents and teachers help children to enjoy even more the language. Developing a good reading habit, it is going to lay the foundation for a lifetime skill.

How can I recognize a good reading program at school? Teachers must show enthusiasm and promote the value and importance of being a good reader. Starting Kindergarten, every student must take assessment tests, to identify their knowledge and skills needed to become successful readers. Reading practice and instruction should be present 60 minutes a day for students in Kindergarten, and 90 minutes a day for 1-3 grade students.

How can I recognize a good reading program at school? Every student in 1-3 grade, who is behind in reading, should receive special instruction and practice in reading. During reading practice and instruction, students learn to combine letters and sounds in order to make up new words. Students have to practice spelling daily and take weekly tests.

How can I recognize a good reading program at school? The connection between reading and writing must be taught daily. Every classroom must be equipped with a book collection. The school library should be used frequently. Students should be allowed to borrow books.
