Acupuncture Treatment of Diseases Cardiology 1: Insomnia 不寐

Definition: 1.Refers to inability to have normal sleep including: Difficulty in falling asleep. Inadequate sleep. Difficulty staying asleep. Being awake all night in severe cases. 2.It may be a form of neurosis western medicine.

Causes and Pathogenesis : Related to: i.Emotional disturbance a.Anxiety and overstress. -Resulting in impair of the heart and spleen. -Resulting in inadequate source of qi and blood -Resulting in failure of nourishment for the heart spirit. b.Fear and Terror and… ii.Over-exertion. -Resulting in impair of the kidney. -Resulting in excessive of heart fire, imbalance of heart and kidney. -Resulting in disquiet of the heart spirit.

Causes and Pathogenesis : Related to: iii.Weak constitution -Resulting in heart and gall bladder deficiency. iv.Improper diet. -Resulting in disharmony of spleen and stomach.

Clinical Manifestations: Chief symptoms: i.Difficult in falling asleep. ii.Easily awaken. iii.Staying up all night.

Clinical Manifestations: A.Heart spleen deficiency type i.Dreaminess. ii.Easily awaken. iii.Palpitation. iv.Amnesia. v.Dizziness. vi.Blurred vision. vii.Pale complexion. viii.Lassitude. ix.Poor appetite. x.Pale tongue. xi.White coting. xii.Thready, weak pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: B.Qi deficiency of heart and gall bladder type i.Dreaminess. ii.Easily awaken. iii.Palpitation. iv.Susceptibility to fear and fright. v.Pale tongue. vi.White coting. vii.Thready, wiry pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: C. Imbalance between heart and kidney type i.Restlessness. ii.Insomnia, alternating between sleep and awakening. iii.Dizziness. iv.Tinnitus. v.Seminal emission. vi.Night sweat. vii.Dry mouth. viii.Red tongue. ix.Thin coating x.Thready, rapid pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: D.Disturbance of heart by liver fire type i.Restlessness. ii.Anxiety. iii.Irritability. iv.Dizziness. v.Headache. vi.Fullness in chest and hypochondriac. vii.Red tongue with thin yellow coating. viii.Wiry, rapid pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: E.Disharmony between spleen and stomach type i.Gastric distention. ii.Belching. iii.Acid regurgitation. iv.Red tongue with thick greasy coating. v.Slippery, rapid pulse.

Principle of Treatment : 1.Calm the heart. 2.Invigorate the brain and marrow. 3.Tranquilize the mind. 4.Disperse the raised yang. Principle channels: 1.HT channel. 2.PC channel. 3.KI channel. 4.BL channel 5.EX-O acupoint

Principle acupoints: 1.HT 7 Shenmen 神门. 2.PC 6 Neiguan 内关. 3.KI 6 Zhaohai 照海. 4.BL 62 Shenmai 申脉. 5.EX-HN Anmian 安眠. 6.EX-HN 1 Sishencong 四神聪.

Prescription explanation (Principle acupoint): 1.HT 7 Shenmen 神门 and PC 6 Neiguan 内关: Shu-Stream and Yuan-Source acupoint of the HT channel and PC channel, chosen to calm the heart and tranquilize the mind. 2.KI 6 Zhaohai 照海 and BL 62 Shenmai 申脉: Channel acupoint of the KI channel and BL channel, also crossing points of the Yin and Yang Hell vessels, chosen to harmonize the function of Yin and Yang. 3.EX-HN 1 Sishenong 四神聪 and EX HN Anmian 安眠. Extra ordinary acupoint, effective point for insomnia and tranquilize the mind, invigorate the brain and marrow.

Principle of treatment A. Heart spleen deficiency type Calm the heart spirit and tonify the function of the spleen. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.BL 15 Xinshu 心俞. 2.BL 20 Pishu 脾俞. 3.BL 43 Pohu 魄户.

Principle of treatment B. Qi deficiency of heart and gall bladder type Calm the heart spirit and tonify the Qi of the gall bladder. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.BL 15 Xinshu 心俞. 2.BL 19 Danshu 胆俞. 3.BL 43 Pohu 魄户.

Principle of treatment C.Imbalance between heart and kidney type Calm the mind and harmonize the heart and kidney visceras. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.BL 15 Xinshu 心俞. 2.KI 3 Taixi 太溪. 3.BL 52 Zhushi 志室. 4.CV 4 Guanyuan 关元.

Principle of treatment D.Disturbance of heart by liver fire type Calm the mind and disperse liver fire. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.LR 2 Xingjian 行间. 2.GB 43 Xiaxi 侠溪.

Principle of treatment E.Disharmony between spleen and stomach type Calm the mind, tonify the function of the spleen and stomach and disperse dampness. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.SP 4 Gongsun 公孙. 2.ST 36 Zusanli 足三里. 3.ST 40 Fenglong 丰隆. 4.ST44 Neiting 内廷.

TCM medical advises: 1.Should have regular routine life. 2.Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol before sleep. 3.Good diet habit avoiding raw, cold and greasy, pungent food. 4.Suitable exercise.
