ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk In the past, equality has often been described as everyone being the same or having the same opportunities Nowadays, it can be described as everyone being different, but having equal rights Equality of opportunity is a concept underpinned by legislation ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk Ask the group if they know what the current legislation is. They may say things like the Disability Discrimination Act (1995), Sex Discrimination Act (1975) and the Race relations Act (1976). However, these no longer exist. The Equality Act (2010) replaced the Equality Act (2006) and updated the above legislation along with others. Valuing equality and advancing diversity You should be positive and pro-active where equality and diversity are concerned You may have to challenge your own attitudes, values and beliefs As a professional, you are first and foremost a teacher, and your personal opinions must not interfere with the teaching and learning process ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk Explain: The term promoting was previously used in discrimination legislation, this has been replaced with the word advancing – the intention being to move forward, to get somewhere and for learners to achieve. Explain how they must be careful not to indulge the minority, to the detriment of the majority. When teaching, always include learners in relevant activities during sessions, and throughout the full learning process, rather than excluding anyone for any reason. The best way to ensure this is to ask them what they need. If asked, learners will usually say what their needs are, whether that is from a religious or cultural point of view, or if they have a particular need in terms of a disability or otherwise. However, it's difficult to help learners if they don't state any specific issues, needs or concerns they might have. Try and ascertain what a learner can do rather than what they can’t do. Ways to promote equality and value diversity Missing text ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk Explain: Under the Equality Act (2010) learners can claim something is offensive even when it is not directed at them. There might be intentional bullying which is obvious or violent, but it can also be unintentional, subtle and dangerous. It might involve nicknames, teasing, name-calling or other behaviour which is not with malicious intent but which is upsetting or hurtful. It might be about the individual’s sexual orientation (real or perceived) or it may be about the sexual orientation (real or perceived) of those with whom the individual associates. It might not be targeted at an individual but consist of a general culture which, for example, appears to tolerate the telling of homophobic jokes. This should have been shared with learners during induction The policy should explain: a definition of unacceptable behaviour how learners can report bullying, harassment or any other forms of unacceptable behaviour how you and the organisation will deal with unacceptable behaviour ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk If any of the group are currently teaching, ask them if they are aware of the policies and procedures at their organisation? ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk Treat any complaints seriously, regardless of who brings them and investigate the complaint thoroughly Deal quickly and firmly with anyone who acts inappropriately Deal with matters informally and internally if possible. The solution may be as simple as pointing out to a learner the effect that their behaviour has on others and asking them to stop Mix learners during group activities so that everyone has the opportunity to work with others ANN GRAVELLS LTD www.anngravells.co.uk If you have time, hold a group discussion based around any of the bullet points which have promoted questions. Finish by asking what one thing they could each change in their own teaching practice to promote equality and value diversity.
