Daily Learning Target “I am ready to be successful at our first summative writing assignment” Progression of Learning “I understand the writing prompt” “I understand the writing rubric” “I have some ideas about what I might write”
“I understand the writing prompt” Answer the following question in 1 paragraph What side of the whaling controversy (ethical, cultural, environmental, legal, or economic) is most important to you and your perspective? Make sure you state your opinion clearly and back it up with details and examples.
CulturalLegalEnvironmental EconomicEthicalOther (please explain)
“I understand the writing rubric” Evaluating Examples I believe that the whaling controversy is, first and foremost, about the environment. The legal, cultural, economic, and ethical sides are important as well but not quite as important. This is because they only focus on one people, or one animal, or one legal issue. The environmental side is about the whole world and the entire ocean food chain. Ken Nichols himself talked about how important the grey whale is to the ocean food chain because it is such a large animal. Ken said, “we live in a world where everything is connected,” and I agree. The environment has to be our main concern because the stakes are so high.
Example #1 A, O, C Example #2 A, O, C Example #3 A, O, C
“I have some ideas about what I might write about” The Makah whaling controversy is really about the ____________ side, because… One meet and greet character who agreed with me was… One meet and greet character who disagreed with me was…
Fist to Five “I am ready to be successful at our first summative writing assignment” Reflection Question 1. On a scale of 1-10 how ready are you? Explain. Homework Complete your pre-writing sentences for tomorrow
Notes Works well if I explain each “side” and then ask students to share a character that goes there Don’t have time to calibrate all three examples so just did the first two and then gave them my grades for them Pre-writing sentences become homework This is probably too much for one lesson I drew a separate table on the board for them to use when they grade the three in their groups
