Introduction and Topic Sentence On June 12, 1929, a little girl named Annelies was born into a loving family that soon faced great evil. She is better known as “Anne Frank” after writing about the two years she spent in hiding with her family and four other people during World War II. The diary that chronicles her life gives insight into real courage and hope. She did not survive the war, but her diary was spared, and through it, readers learn first and foremost about what real courage means. Anne, her sister, and parents faced unbelievable hardship, but never gave up. This teenage girl was literally trapped in a small space with people she did not choose—day in and day out. They had no conveniences and relied on what others could sneak in for food. They had to be completely quiet during the daylight hours in order to avoid detection. She was very brave in the face of great atrocities and chose to write rather than succumb to despair. In addition, her spirit of hope is shared with readers to this day. In an article simply entitled, “Anne Frank”, the author Dina Porst writes, The diary, which in all its translations and editions was at first perceived as simply the story of a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust, gradually became a symbol of suffering humanity, which despite its burden still believed in human values and the basic goodness of human beings. If Anne could believe that humankind is basically good and hang on to hope for a better future after the travails she experienced, her book represents faith in a world peace that can overcome evil. In conclusion, as Anne put pencil to paper, she not only shared a glimpse of a young girl’s life during a turbulent time—she testified to courage and hope.
