COIA History Emerged in 2002 as an alliance of faculty senates from NCAA FBS schools whose mission is to provide a national faculty voice on intercollegiate sports issues. Currently, 57 of the 115 FBS schools are members

2011 COIA Actions Taken Vote to support in principle/concept the recommendations made by the Knight Commission in “Restoring the Balance: Dollars, Values, and the Future of College Sports” 1.Requiring greater transparency, including better measures to compare athletics spending to academic spending – Transparency Make NCAA financial reports public Publish additional information about long-term debt and capital spending Report annually on growth rates in academic and athletic spending – Strengthened Oversight Reform the NCAA Division 1 certification process Strengthen accreditation Reinforce board responsibilities.

2011 COIA Actions Taken Vote to support in principle/concept the recommendations made by the Knight Commission in “Restoring the Balance: Dollars, Values, and the Future of College Sports” 2.Rewarding practices that make academic values a priority – Strengthening eligibility standards for participation in championships – Distributing revenues according to educational values and priorities Change revenue distribution formulas to prioritized educational values over winning Academic-Athletics balance fund

2011 COIA Actions Taken Vote to support in principle/concept the recommendations made by the Knight Commission in “Restoring the Balance: Dollars, Values, and the Future of College Sports” 3.Treating college athletes as students first and foremost – not as professionals – Ensuring that athletes are students first by limiting intrusions on academic responsibilities and limiting commercial activities Structure all postseason competitions to benefit and protect student- athletes Reduce length of seasons and number of events Prevent use of athletes’ identities to promotion commercial entities or products

2011 COIA Actions Taken Vote to support in principle/concept the recommendations made by the Knight Commission in “Restoring the Balance: Dollars, Values, and the Future of College Sports” – Curbing the trends toward professionalization of athletics staffing devoted to athletic development Enforce current coaching limitations Establish new rules on the number of non-coaching personnel. Coaches’ compensation – Examining scholarship offerings to assess whether costs can be reduced without eliminating equitable participation opportunities for men and women

2011 COIA Actions Taken Vote to support in principle/concept and encourage the NCAA to pursue changes for two-year colleges and transfers Qualifiers & Nonqualifiers – Raise GPA gap from 2.00 to 2.50 – PE limit of two credits to transfer (currently can be up to 12) Nonqualifiers – Core requirements of three math, three English, and three science (adds science) – Eliminate three semester/four quarter full-time attendance requirement – A year of “academic readiness” – practice but not play (NCAA clock would not start this year)

2011 COIA Meeting Request that member schools’ Faculty Senates vote to support the Knight Commission “Restoring the Balance: Dollars, Values, and the Future of College Sports” recommendations and Vote to support the NCAA proposed rule changes for two-year colleges.
