Going for growth in Hertfordshire John Gourd Chairman Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership

Growth has slowed

…is growing... Growth has slowed

Growth has varied

Growth : a national priority

What has the LEP done so far? Established the evidence base Invested in key infrastructure –Business Park Broadband –Watford Health Campus –Elstree Studios –Maylands Established inward investment service Lobbied UK & EU Government for funds...but we need a long term plan for the economy

LEP vision for growth Three elements: –20 year vision –10-15 year strategy –5 year delivery plan Consultation - spring 2013 Needs to be focused, prioritised and resourced to secure further investment

Smart growth Key Messages: –High value sectors, jobs and skills –Maintaining a high quality of life –Improving connectivity –Making best use of technology –Being clear on what growth and where

Economic growth can also deliver... Decent income levels (increasing the tax base) Good health (to be able to work, and work for longer) A better work/life balance Secure jobs (less unemployment) Good quality transport systems More affordable housing A more sustainable environment

Reflections Whilst still strong, our economy needs renewed effort The resources and responsibilities are shifting to localities - it is up to us Our growth plan is a massive opportunity to secure our future prosperity IF we can agree a collective ambition for Hertfordshire

Thank You
