EUROPE SETTING AN EXAMPLE

RFID, IoT and SMART

A message from Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda: “RFID, the Internet of Things and related technologies will help shape our future. Strategic Governments will manage to invest in the deployment of these technologies whilst we collectively need to reflect on the ethical and other societal concerns that are implied, as well as the values that the Internet of Things will enshrine.”

A message from Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda: “€50million have already been invested in the Internet of Things research and development and the first results of this collaborative effort will become visible before the end of For me there is nol douibt thatb 2011 is the defining year for RFID and the Internet of Things in Europe” “€50million have already been invested in the Internet of Things research and development and the first results of this collaborative effort will become visible before the end of For me there is no doubt that 2011 is the defining year for RFID and the Internet of Things in Europe”

Define and promote a common vision of the Internet of Things.  A very important process  Minimise overlaps, maximise synergies  Contribution to overall Challenge 1  Technological challenges  Policy objectives  Links to IoT Expert Group IoT European Research Cluster

1.Promoting and accommodating the outcomes of CASAGRAS1 2.Accommodating the identity coding and management requirements 3.Accommodating the architectural developments – greater autonomy 4.Building the framework for applications and services 5.Foster the international dimensions to IOT realisation, including socio-economic issues, privacy, security and governance

CASAGRAS Meeting – 1 st December 2008 – Shanghai Internet of Things – CASAGRAS Definition A global network infrastructure, linking physical and virtual objects through the exploitation of data capture and communication capabilities. This infrastructure includes existing and evolving Internet and network developments. It will offer specific object-identification, sensor and connection capability as the basis for the development of independent federated services and applications. These will be characterised by a high degree of autonomous data capture, transfer event network connectivity and interoperability.

International Platform Internationally-partnered platform to help steer the IoT development around the world with members investigating, communicating, disseminating and exploiting the key elements of the project. They will also undertake a fact-finding mission for their individual region. Other potential volunteers and experts to cover the rest of the world

Dissemination and Education To help identify and contribute to a global dissemination and education, training and awareness programme to explain the IoT to business and academe; to promote the set up of academies for AIDC and the IoT. Alignment with IoT-I WP4 Dissemination and European/International Community Building

OUR VISION: To provide a network of excellence that creates opportunities and increases the competitiveness of European Member States in the area of RFID thought leadership……development…….and implementation While at the same time… Creating awareness and positioning RFID within the mainstream of information and communications technology (ICT)

“RFID will form the basis of better and safer healthcare, drastically improved supply chain management, low cost environmental monitoring for a cleaner, more sustainable future We need a pro-active European approach so that we can benefit from the advantages of RFID whilst giving citizens, consumers and businesses choice, transparency and control.” Viviane Reding, Former EU Commissioner for Information, Society & Media

AN EU SPONSORED THEMATIC NETWORK... RFID Do you know what it is? Do you know what it does? Did you ever consider if it might help you or your company?

AN EU SPONSORED THEMATIC NETWORK DO YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY ITEMS DO YOU NEED TO MANAGE ITEM INFORMATION DO YOU HAVE PROBLEMS TRACKING ITEMS OR ASSETS WOULD YOU BENEFIT FROM INCREASED THROUGHPUT OF ITEMS DOES YOUR AVAILABLE SPACE CAUSE STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL PROBLEMS DO YOU ENCOUNTER BOTTLENECKS IN SORTING ITEMS ARE YOU ABLE TO TRACK AND RECOVER PALLETS AND CONTAINERS DO YOU HAVE TO PERFORM TIME CONSUMING MANUAL INVENTORY CHECKS DO YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEFT OR MISAPPROPRIATION OF GOODS HOW RELIABLE IS THE DATA YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR BUSINESS PROCESSES IS MANUAL DATA ENTRY A SIGNIFICANT FEATURE OF YOUR BUSINESS COULD YOU USE NON LINE OF SIGHT READING CAPABILITY LOOK AT THESE 12 STATMENTS. DO ANY APPLY TO YOU? IF THE ANSWER IS “YES” RFID COULD BE THE ANSWER TO IMPROVED EFFICIENCY, PRODUCTIVITY and.. PROFITABILITY!

AN EU SPONSORED THEMATIC NETWORK If you have answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, the likliehood is that your organisation could benefit from RFID. If you would like to know more CLICK HERE and answer a simple five minute diagnostic and forward it to us for independent evaluation. You could qualify for a FREE visit from one of our Business Assist Advisors – and in certain Member States you could obtain financial help in implementing a solution.

BUSINESS ASSIST – WHAT IS IT? AIM UK INTRODUCED A BUSINESS ASSIST PROGRAMME FOR SMEs in 2004

THEY HAD TO SATISFY A SMALL PANEL OF RECOGNISED EXPERTS OF THEIR OWN UNDERSTANDING OF RFID AIM SECONDED A GROUP OF BUSINESS ASSIST EXPERTS FROM ITS MEMBERSHIP.

WE WERE SUCCESSFUL AND WERE ABLE TO OFFER UP TO 40% CONTRIBUTION TO IMPLEMENTATION COSTS UP TO €40,000 AIM WENT OUT TO OBTAIN NATIONAL AND EUROPEAN GOVERNMENT FUNDING.

Work Package 9 The main tasks will be to establish details of existing National Government initiatives and support programmes relating to RFID: Establish a communication pack to go to all Governments and Government agencies outlining what RACE networkRFID is, what it is doing and how we can help Plan Governmental workshops in the second half of 2010 and at the end of the project at which Governments can give examples of their own Best Practice and get an overview of what is happening in the RFID marketplace generally Develop a framework and a set of deliverables for creating member-state-funded national centres for RFID It is planned that the work of WP9 will commence at the 2010 General Assembly in Frankfurt

The UK Government views RFID as an excellent tool for raising productivity and promoting sustainable growth in the economy. As the Government’s principal action in rebalancing the UK economy entails addressing fiscal deficit the business benefits of the use of RFID are seen as important to addressing tough economic challenges particularly in the retail sector. Consequently, the UK Government is keen to improve and encourage the take-up of RFID technology. It wishes to work closely with the European Commission in addressing barriers to take up such as privacy and security matters UK Government - RFID Vision
