Learning – Believing – Achieving Pathway Choices September 2011

Learning – Believing – Achieving If I am going to have the future I would like, what am I going to do about it today?

Learning – Believing – Achieving There are some key ‘CHOICE POINTS’ when all young people need to make decisions in order to progress. What decisions? ? For example: choosing subjects for Year 11 These decisions affect future prospects, career, education, lifestyle choices and earning power

Learning – Believing – Achieving Deciding on courses and subjects for year11 Key choice points For Newport High School students: Deciding which direction to take at the end of Year Deciding how to move on from school 17/18+

Learning – Believing – Achieving What do you need to think about when making these choices What qualifications do you already have? ? What are your strengths? ? What opportunities are available and what does each involve? ?

Learning – Believing – Achieving What are employers looking for? When employers advertise a vacancy they ask for a range of skills and qualifications. Most employers ask for a similar group of skills – often called: employability skills Employers want the right person for their job Employability skills are the skills and personal qualities that employers believe an employee needs, in order to do the job well.

Learning – Believing – Achieving Top 10 Employability Skills Some employers look for other skills too, but these are the top 10 across the majority of jobs. 9. Enthusiasm 10. Keen to learn6. Problem-solving 5. Punctuality 4. Commitment 3. Numeracy 7. Team-working 8. IT skills 1. Communication 2. Literacy

Learning – Believing – Achieving What will be studied (the content or syllabus)? What Opportunities? What kind and level of qualification it offers? What job or further study opportunities it can lead to? The more you know about all the opportunities on offer, the better you’ll be able to choose what will suit you. For each course, subject or programme, you need to find out:

Learning – Believing – Achieving What Opportunities? There are many different types and levels of qualifications and many different ways to progress. The chart opposite shows some of them and how they link together

Learning – Believing – Achieving Important advice for students in Year 8 All students should aim to complete the Level 2 threshold and move on to Level 3 whilst they are a student at Newport High School. To complete the Level 2 threshold which is equivalent to 5 GCSE passes at A*-C grades or 5 vocational passes, you need to ask your TfL, the KS3 levels you are predicted to achieve at the end of this year: If this is Level 6+ in English, Maths and Science then: – Select any subjects of your choice from pathways A or B&C If this is Level 5+ in English, Maths and Science then: – Look carefully at the information about each of the options available in Pathway A and Pathways B&C. Some GCSE subjects may not be available to you until next year If this is Level 4+ in English, Maths and Science then: – A choice from Pathway A will be most likely to ensure you achieve the Level 2 threshold by the end of Year 11

Learning – Believing – Achieving Important advice for students in Year 9 All students should aim to complete the Level 2 threshold and move on to Level 3 whilst they are a student at Newport High School. To complete the Level 2 threshold which is equivalent to 5 GCSE passes at A*-C grades or 5 vocational passes, you need to ask your TfL, how many qualifications you are predicted to achieve at the end of this school year? If this is 5 or more then: – Select any subjects of your choice from pathways A or B&C If this is 4 or more then: – Select any subjects of your choice from pathways A or B&C If this is 3 or more then: – A choice from Pathway A will be most likely to ensure you achieve the Level 2 threshold by the end of Year 11
