Alternative Practice

Why have an Alternative Practice Placement? Health care is not limited to that available in NHS establishments, independent hospitals and community health services. As our understanding about health increases, it becomes very clear that health care is becoming the business of more and more individuals, partnerships, agencies and companies. Nurses must ensure their activity synchronises with that of others rather than it remaining in splendid isolation. This planned experience is a very brief encounter with that world of alternative health provision and aims to help you witness the extent to which this has expanded and how this may impact on your future role.

Planning Your Alternative Practice Placement The week long experience you select will need to be one which enables you to focus on one or more of your learning outcomes. The aim is not to ‘achieve’ these outcomes as the people supporting you in your alternative placement, are unlikely to be approved mentors/assessors in nursing. However you do need a purpose therefore you will need to identify one learning outcome from your CAP that will drive your experience choice and activity. Example 1.3 Demonstrate an ability to engage effectively in professional relationships with family members/carers of people with long- term problems such as dementia

When will Alternative Practice Occur Alternative Practice will be the last week of Semester 2 Year 2 This will be week commencing Monday 12 th May 2014 For students wishing to have an international experience this needs to be negotiated separately ( need to contact Jeremy Jolley)

Where - examples The aim would be to spend time with an organisation or person. For example if you were interested in exploring the needs of people with long -term conditions : This may be achieved: at a carers project at a charity such as Age Concern. Mind or the Alzheimer’s Disease Society at a community arts group at a community resource centre (e.g. Women’s Centre, Carers Centre).

27.1 Help people to choose healthy food and fluid in keeping with their personal preference and cultural needs Where could you go to find out more about this? The aim would be to spend time with an organisation or person identifying how they address the issue of promoting health food and dietary intake and meeting different cultural needs For example this may be achieved: at a green gym/allotment project with a health or life coach with a slimming group leader in a school kitchen at Sure Start or other community resource project/centre

How to Secure and Agree a Suitable Placement You MUST: Consider the learning outcomes you are aiming to focus on whilst in your alternative practice placement Select your placement area and demonstrate to your PSGL, with reference to the outcomes selected, the purpose of your choice. Liaise with the alternative placement and your PSGL to make sure all required paperwork is completed BEFORE you start the placement.

What happens if you are unable to find an alternative practice experience? In the event that you are unable to find an appropriate alternative practice experience you will be required to undertake a community profiling exercise. Dates for Your Diary In your semester 1 PSGL individual tutorial inform your PSGL of your alternative placement area and demonstrate, with reference to the outcomes selected, the purpose of your choice. The FHSC Alternative Placement Health and Safety Checklist must be completed by the provider by 31 st March 2014 The alternative placement provider must be supplied with a letter of verification from the University confirming you have been CRB/ DBS checked, and declared yourself to be of Good Health & Good Character to the NMC. This must be completed by week commencing 30 th April 2014 ‘Record of Alternative Practice’ must be handed in by Friday 13 th June 2014

Following on from your alternative practice experience In the third assessment week (5th or 6 th June 2014) you will be required to present a poster to your PSGL group (you will have 5 minutes to present). The poster will where you had your alternative practice experience and hw you addressed the learning outcome. Alternatively, if you completed a community profile you will present a poster on this.
