Area Project 2009 THE BLACKBURN SCHOOL

Background The Blackburn School is situated close to the city of Durban and is attended by about 250 students. It was built over 30 years ago by private donations to assist the rural children with a facility for provide basic education. Most of the children’s parents work on the farms in the area. They do not earn enough to feed their children properly. Often their children do not have a single meal for the day. The government funding provides basic education tools for the school. They also provide porridge every morning for the students to eat. Most of the children come to school because they get this meal to eat. We have realised that the provision of food is the best way to get these children to attend school regularly and hence gain a good education.

The Challenge Our challenge is to help ensure that these children attend school to receive a good basic education whilst also receiving proper nourishment to grow into healthy adults. The provision of good meals will achieve both these objectives and hence its our chosen method of meeting the challenge.

The Current Situation The students don’t have proper facilities like chairs, tables, shelves, books and other essential learning tools.

The current situation At present the feeding system is very poor & it is not healthy or effective. No decent food preparation or storage facilities exist.

The 3 Phase Project The project has 3 phases. Phase 1 – To build a proper kitchen, storage & feeding facility. Phase 2 – To set up a feeding scheme to provide one full meal per day for the children. Phase 3 – To assist education beyond feeding and provide proper education tools and facilities. The project has been adopted by all 11 tables in our Area.

Phase 1 The building of a proper facility to store and prepare meals for the students. Our plans are developed to upgrade the existing room to create an effective feeding system that can prepare & serve each child a meal in the shortest possible time.

Poor existing facilities

Permanent Round Table Branding The new kitchen will feature a Round Table Rondel on the front of the building and a list of all organisations that supported the project. This will provide permanent branding and exposure for Round Table. These children will grow up knowing that Round Table has changed their lives.

Round Table changing lives

Phase 2 Phase 2 will be the development of a feeding scheme. We already have a few large supermarket chains stores that are willing to assist in providing food. Round Table will supervise the delivery & management of the food.

A good meal can help learning

Phase 2 Target We are aiming to provide 250 children with a basic meal for each school day. Our aim is to develop a 90% attendance and hence ensure good learning.

Phase 3 Phase 3 will involve the development of the library system and to provide other tools to assist education.

A happy child learns better Education is the key to empower the younger generation to develop themselves and contribute to the country.

A multinational project We have potential support from Round Table Germany, Holland & Austria. Together we can make a big difference and achieve the goals

Adopt, Adapt & Improve Adopt the ethos of international tabling and support for each other Adapt them to the current project. Improve the lives of the underprivileged.
