About Links in Dreamweaver

When you create a link to any doc. that exists outside the folder in which the current doc. Is located, the path for the link will include the characters:../ preceding the filename.../ is the command that tells the browser to go up one folder level from the current location. In Dreamweaver, you don’t have to use these symbols, because Dreamweaver will determine the path for you. If you are not sure of the proper path, you should browse to select the desired file

Adding new folders and files to a site To create the initial framework of the site structure through the development of linked placeholder pages, you’ll need to create a number of new pages and folders. This can be done: Files panel-> Expand button

A site Map gives you a visual representation of the selected portion of your site. It does not display all pages from your site; It starts with a page that has been defined as a home page and shows you all pages that the home page links to It continue down the hierarchy of the links until it reaches a dead-end page ( with no links) “Orphaned” pages that cannot be reached through direct paths from the home page do not display in the site map Creating a Site Map

Broken links verification Broken links are links that do not follow a valid path, or that connect with nonexistent files. These broken links are not recommendable because they produce errors and make it difficult for users to browse our site. To verify if there are any Broken links in our site we have to go to the Check links option Broken links

You can open it through the Files panel. You already know that the Files panel can be opened via the Window menu, and then selecting the Files option, or pressing F8 key. Once the Files panel is opened, you have to go to and in the drop-down menu select File and then the Check links option, or press the Shift+F8 keys. Broken links

Then a new panel will be shown, in which it's possible to verify if there are any broken links. The first thing to do is to click on the button, then you could select where to verify the broken links. They could be in the Current document, in The Entire site, or in the files or folders of the selected site. In the Show option you need to specify if the Broken links, the External Links or Orphaned Files are to be displayed. Broken links

External Links are links to documents which are located outside of our site. So the program wiIl not verify if these links are correct or not, it will just enumerate them. Through Orphaned Files all documents of the site that are not being vinculated by others are shown whilst they are not linked to other documents. These documents are sometimes not being used, and are just wasting valuable space in the drive. Of these three kind of links, we're going to focus on the Broken links. All documents that have a broken link will be displayed in the panel, and also the document each one of them references to.

Repairing broken links There are two ways to fix broken links: – The first way is to click twice on the document name in the files panel list and it will be opened. It's then possible to find the faulty link in the document and to modify it through the Properties Inspector. – The other way is to click on the broken link instead of the file's name. In this case you can modify the document's name directly in the panel or look for it by clicking on the icon that looks like a folder appearing on the right side.
