What is my Goal? By the end of this presentation, the class will be able to compute surface area of daily objects such as a camping tent (a pyramid). The class will also be able to understand why we need to know area and how these certain shapes are beneficial.

Curriculum Framing Questions  Essential Questions- How do shapes affect our lives  Unit Questions- How are geometric shapes used in constructing architecture? Why is it necessary to find area and volume before constructing structures?  Content Questions- What is the formula for volume of a pyramid? What geometric shapes are used?  8.0 Students know, derive, and solve problems involving the perimeter, circumference, area, volume, lateral area, and surface area of common geometric figures.  9.0 Students compute the volumes and surface areas of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres; and students commit to memory the formulas for prisms, pyramids, and cylinders.  11.0 Students determine how changes in dimensions affect the perimeter, area, and volume of common geometric figures and solids.  Math is useful in all aspects of our lives. Equations allow us to simplify problems and understand situations. We use mathematics in everyday activities such as….  Knowing how much to spend and save at the store?  How long it will take to get from home to school?  How many steps we take to get to class?  How many students can fit in the classroom?  How many bricks we need to build a house?  How much pavement we need to full the hallways?  How many people can fit in our tent?

Why? Definitions: A pyramid is a solid figure with typically a square base and triangle sides. The triangle sides meet at top point called a Vertex. Importance: By calculating the area of this figure, we can know how much space we have within the pyramid. Applying the information to real life experience!!!! You and a two friends are going camping with one tent. Each of you are about 5 ft tall. The tent you have is 6 ft long by 6 feet wide and is 7 ft tall. Is this tent going to be big enough for all of you to fit?

Tent Information Length = 6 ft Width= 6 ft Height= 7ft Volume of pyramid = 1/3 × Area of base × height Area of base = Area of Square (length x width) Volume of pyramid (V)= 1/3 × (6x 6) × height V= 1/3 × (36) × height V= 1/3 × (36) × (7) V= 1/3 × (252) V= 84 cubic ft

Camping With Friends Knowing the volume of the tent is crucial. 84 cubic ft tells us that there will be enough space within the tent to fit all three people at about 5 ft each tall. This tells us that the tent is large enough to use for camping. The Bigger Picture By understanding calculations and volumes, we can find out how to replicate architectures and how to build structures. We can also use the information in determining sizes, prices and buying needs. This can ultimately save us money and time This is used in every day situations such as this.
