April 2010LJH5 Class Outline  Welcome and Introduction (10 min)  Issues in finding mental health information (10 min)  PsycINFO: Basic Searches (30 min)  PsycINFO: Advanced Searches (30 min)  Wrap-Up (5 min)

April 2010LJH6 What is “Mental Health?”  American Heritage Dictionary: “1. A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. 2. A branch of medicine that deals with the achievement and maintenance of psychological well-being. 3. A person's overall emotional and psychological condition.”

April 2010LJH7 Mental Health in NC LIVE  Browse Resources by Categories  Medical & Health Category List:  CINAHL, HealthSource, PubMed, PsycINFO  Resources for Teachers Category List:  ERIC, Academic Search Premier, PsycINFO  We will be focusing on searching PsycINFO today

April 2010LJH8 Finding Mental Health Information  Lots of resources exist for health info  PubMed (MEDLINE)  CINAHL, etc.  Lots of resources exist for social sciences  Sociological Abstracts (not in NC LIVE)  ERIC (education)  One major resource specifically for psychology / psychiatry  PsycINFO

April 2010LJH9 Using Non-Specific Sources #1  PubMed treats mental health differently in the MeSH hierarchy than “physical” health:  Diseases Category vs. Psychiatry & Psychology Category  Category includes mechanisms, disorders, processes, and disciplines  Mental Health = “The state wherein the person is well adjusted”

April 2010LJH10 Let’s Discuss! Here are some questions to think about – and to discuss in the chat: 1. Where do you tend to go first for mental health information? 2. What kind of information do you find there? 3. Now that you know how PubMed treats psychiatry, will you act differently?

April 2010LJH11 Class Outline  Welcome and Introduction (10 min)  Issues in finding mental health information (10 min)  PsycINFO: Keyword Searching (30 min)  PsycINFO: Advanced Searching (30 min)  Wrap-Up (5 min)

April 2010LJH12 PsycINFO: Overview  Citations and summaries dating from the early 1800s  2.5+ million articles from more than 2,200 periodicals  Academic research and practice literature in psychology  Also includes related disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, education, social work, law, criminology, social science, and organizational behavior  International focus (over 45 countries in more than 27 languages)  Formats: journal articles, dissertations, book chapters, books, technical reports, etc.  Increasing amount of full-text

April 2010LJH13 The Basics  Standard EBSCO Searching  Keywords, Boolean, Stemming  Search by field or in all text (default)  Standard EBSCO features apply:  Sorted by reverse chronological date  Title goes to citation record  Can save, , etc using Folders  Faceted searching of subjects/publication type

April 2010LJH14 Citation Record  Standard EBSCO  Hyperlinked authors, journal, subject headings  “Find Similar Results”  Additional PsycInfo indexes  Classification, population, location, age group, tests/measures used, methodology, publication type  Number of items in bibliography

April 2010LJH15 Refining Your Search  “Limit your results” tab  Standard EBSCO limits (Full text, peer reviewed, etc.)  “Narrow results by” tab  Source type, Subject, Publication, Age group  Population group, Intended audience  Methodology, Classification code

April 2010LJH16 Search History: Combos and Alerts  Standard EBSCO feature  View/print recent search history  Go back to previous search  Combine searches  Save/Retrieve searches & alerts

April 2010LJH17 Let’s Practice!  You have a student who is interested in studying the psychosocial needs and stresses on people who care for Alzheimer’s patients. The student would like to find, in particular, tests for evaluating Alzheimer’s caregivers’ mental health, as well as articles evaluating these tests.  Using PsycINFO, do a keyword search, including limits as appropriate, to find one or two RECENT articles that would be a good starting place for this student.  Come back and chat about what you did and what you found!

April 2010LJH18 Class Outline  Welcome and Introduction (10 min)  Issues in finding mental health information (10 min)  PsycINFO: Keyword Searching (30 min)  PsycINFO: Advanced Searching (30 min)  Wrap-Up (5 min)

April 2010LJH19 Subject Searching: Thesaurus  Link at top left of the page  Browse for terms by relevancy (recommended) or vocabulary  Select terms straight from results or view more detailed record of one  Explode = include more narrow terms  Major Concept = main point of article  No subheadings (unlike PubMed, CINAHL)  Browse for terms up/down/sideways in tree

April 2010LJH20 Searching by Citation Relations  Search forward & backward in scholarly time – parents & children of an article  Find articles by browsing or searching

April 2010LJH21 Citing References: Children  Citing Articles = Newer articles that use yours in their bibliographies

April 2010LJH22 Cited References: Parents  Cited references = older articles, in the bibliography

April 2010LJH23 Related Records: Cousins  Related Records = Articles that share references in common with yours

April 2010LJH24 Let’s Practice!  Staying with our psychology of caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients:  Find appropriate thesaurus terms for this search  Using one of the good articles you found first, find some citing and cited articles that may be helpful  Come back to the chat to discuss!

April 2010LJH25 Class Outline  Welcome and Introduction (10 min)  Issues in finding mental health information (10 min)  PsycINFO: Keyword Searching (30 min)  PsycINFO: Advanced Searching (30 min)  Wrap-Up (5 min)

April 2010LJH26 What Have We Learned?  Psychiatry / psychology is not adequately addressed by either the medical literature or the social sciences literature  Searching for – and defining – information in “psych” can be complex and time consuming.

April 2010LJH27 What Else Have We Learned?  PsycINFO is the primary source for finding mental health literature citations & abstracts.  PsycINFO allows several different modes of searching: keyword, thesaurus, and citation.  These search options are similar to PubMed and CINAHL, with important differences.

April 2010LJH28 Further (chat) Questions What didn’t we talk about? What do you want to know more about? Where do you see these resources as useful? Please use the chat to discuss!

April 2010LJH29 Thank you!  Watch for the SurveyMonkey course evaluation that will be coming via .  Feel free to visit Health.cfm for more information and mental health resources. Health.cfm  For upcoming classes, visit
