The Knowledge Bank Project at the Ohio State University Presented at the American Accounting Association Meeting – Chicago 8/6/07 Charles J. Popovich Head Business Librarian The Ohio State University

What is the OSU Knowledge Bank? A Repository Collects Organizes Stores Shares Preserves – OSU Digital Information

How is the Knowledge Bank Organized? Arranged by Communities --a group or individual with a focus, i.e. College or Individual Departments Research Grant Team Research Center Elements of Knowledge Bank Communities Produce knowledge in a digital format to store, preserve and distribute it. Communities affiliated with OSU

What Computer Platform does the Knowledge Bank use? Dspace – a digital system developed by MIT in collaboration with the Hewlett- Packard Corporation It will capture, store, index and preserve OSU’s research and make it available to others.

What are the Benefits of the Knowledge Bank? Immediate distribution of research to a worldwide audience A Google search can be done for materials in the Knowledge Bank Each item in the Knowledge Bank is assigned an identifier – a URL which can be used in a citation. It provides a Web presence for the work and makes a commitment to preserve the platform if and when it is needed.

Contributing Work to the Knowledge Bank Each community identifies who in the community is authorized to contribute materials to the Knowledge Bank. The workflow with the Knowledge Bank and community determines to accept or reject a submission, edit metadata and to authorize the submission of materials.

Who is using DSpace? 260 installations In 42 countries With 968,297 documents

Copyright and Intellectual Property The contributor to the Knowledge Bank is the copyright holder. The Knowledge Bank support team will assist communities and/or individual needs in terms of the copyright/intellectual property issues.

Restricting Access Open access is encouraged and promoted, however, circumstances may be as such that restricted access to an item in a community’s collection is necessary. The Knowledge Bank can limit or completely block access to materials.

Citing of the Knowledge Bank Materials Author’s Name Title of the Document Title of the Complete Work Date of the Publication or Latest Revision URL Date of Access

Benefits of the Knowledge Bank Provides easy, quick and reliable remote access to OSU’s research and scholarly materials. Supports and encourages collaboration with colleagues.

Can Materials be Withdrawn from the Knowledge Bank? There may be times when items are withdrawn from the Knowledge Bank, but they are not actually removed. Items are just removed from view, thus preventing the loss of historical records. All of the items are traced as a note with a message that says “removed from view at the request of the author” or some similar statement.

Knowledge Bank Changes and Metadata Items cannot be edited or changed An updated version may be submitted Metadata (Data about Data) – Manually created metadata adds value because it ensures consitency.
