Outline Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish Quiet Time

Tabgha

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:10-17) 10.And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11.But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12.When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here."

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:10-17) 13.But He said to them, "You give them something to eat.“ And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people." 14.For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of fifty." 15.And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16.Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17.So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:12-17) Important miracle in the Bible –Miracle of God’s blessing –Appears in all 4 Gospels –Bible reading every time there are 5 Sundays in one month Three key points –People in need –Inadequate disciples –Adequate Savior

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:12-17) People in need –“But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him…” –Disciples wanted to send them away “But He said to them, You give them something to eat.” When God wants to meet the needs of people, He uses people

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:12-17) Inadequate disciples –We think we need to have the resources God doesn’t want us to serve out of our abundance, but out of our inadequacy –God likes to do big things with little resources and little people E.g. Elijah the Tishbite, Jeremiah, Joseph, Moses,… Christ will give His adequacy to cover my inadequacy to meet the needs of the people –Saidii farmer story

Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish (Luke 9:12-17) Adequate Savior –When I give Him what I do have: He blesses, breaks, and satisfies –Never find blessing without brokenness Seeds die Abraham was too old to have children Sinful woman broke the alabaster flask (Luke 7:38) –God satisfies “So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.” –The Bread of Life –An abundance of Christ and His blessing

What? Why? and How?

Quiet Time is daily time that I set aside to be alone with God. CONSISTENCY is key: 15 min each day for 7 days is better than 2 hours once a week. Quiet Time is NOT a replacement for Agpeya or Daily Bible Reading! What am I doing? I am praying and meditating on His word.

Why do I need to do Quiet Time? Already meditating on God’s word, GREAT! –Recommit to this goal His adequacy for my life 1.Places pressures of life in proper perspective –Luke 10:38-42 “And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word…but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” 2.Source of Wisdom –II Timothy 3: Become more in His image daily 4.Nursing Mother –I Thessalonians 2:7

Quiet Time: How to Avoid Burnout Materials: Bible, Journal, Pen, St. Mark’s Quiet Time Schedule (Or create your own schedule) Time: 15 min (Morning is recommended; Christ and David were the examples.) 1.Before I start, even open the Bible a.“Let Your word dwell in me richly.” Col 3:16 b.“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 18:14 c.“Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.” I Samuel 3:10 d.“Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” Psalm 50:7 e.“Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” Psalm 119:18 f.Lord, help me repent g.Lord, what do you want me to do?....etc. 2.Read the passage a.one part should stick out  Sermons and Resources  Quiet Time  Guide, Schedule (2005), Sermon by Fr. Anthony Messeh

Quiet Time: How to Avoid Burnout 3.Read the passage slower, paying attention to the verse that stuck out during the first reading 4.Write a prayer after the verse 5.Write about what is one my mind (one sentence for every idea, entire passage is one page) 6.Asking for blessing for the day, meetings, outreach visits, asking God to guide the day 7.Names of people on my mind  Sermons and Resources  Quiet Time  Guide, Schedule (2005), Sermon by Fr. Anthony Messeh

Quiet Time: How to Avoid Burnout Once you start this new spiritual exercise of meditating on God’s word –Expect an attack from the devil –Pray for God’s grace to overcome the devil –Find someone to be accountable to Not a priest A friend that you can trust who will ask you about your spiritual life, QT, etc. Analogy: If you have a friend that goes with you to the gym, you are more likely to stick to your exercise regimen.

“Therefore humble yourselves under the might hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for H E cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 Glory be to God forever, Amen.
