Hoboken: Model City for Advanced Spectrum Sharing Technologies R. Chandramouli (Mouli) and K.P. Subbalakshmi (Suba) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

City Level Pilot Trials Hoboken Smart City Project –Robust connectivity to wireless sensors monitoring water level in Hudson river, for high fidelity flood forecasting, modeling and simulation for emergency planning Hoboken PATH, NJ Transit trains and NY Waterway –HD, real-time, interactive mobile video streaming for situational awareness using multitude of bands (cellular, WiFi, satellites, …) MileMesh Project –City level wireless mesh network using roof top mounted wireless routers. Citizen volunteer powered Hoboken-NYC across the river spectrum sharing experiments

Why Hoboken? Strong support from the Hoboken Mayor, Public Safety and other stakeholders for this project Dense multi-frequency wireless region, combined with NYC and other neighborhood cities fits the large scale requirement Strong community involvement for robust wireless communications (e.g., MileMesh network) ConnectingNJ broadband initiative of NJ State; Hoboken storm resiliency project ($230 million)

Current Partnerships (exploring more)
