In 1350, a catapult was stationed at the top of a 500 meter cliff overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, a strategic waterway that leads to the Mediterranean Sea. The catapult is set up to launch a large boulder with an initial velocity of 100 m/s at an angle of 45 degrees. Assume the launch point is 4 meters above the top of the cliff. What is the maximum range of the catapult?

In order to hit enemy ships entering their waterway, soldiers would have to account for the speed of the incoming ships as well as the time it takes for the boulder to reach them. They would set up a floating marker in the water as a guide so when the enemy ships passed the marker, they would fire. If the typical velocity of a wooden ship was 5 m/s in the rough water, how far away from the edge of the cliff would the soldiers have to set the floating marker in order to hit the ship? (Assume the ship is heading directly toward the cliff)
