Introduction The book, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn(1999), is about a 14- year- old boy named Seikei, who is the son of a wealthy merchant in Japan. They go on a trip to the city of Edo for business, and stop at the Toakido Inn located in the city of Kameyama. Seikei's dream is to be a samurai, but his father disapproves. On the journey a stops at a check point and runs into a samurai called Lord Hakuseki. He is carrying a priceless red jewel intended for a present for the shogun, a government leader. Lord Hakuseki also stayed at the Tokaido Inn. A paper merchant’s daughter, Michiko, was selling paper to the Lord, who showed her the jewel. That night, Seikei went to the terrace and met Michiko there and she told Seikei ghost stories. Later that night, a ghost called a jikininki. The ghost was taunting Seikei with the stolen jewel. Seikei stomped his feet and the ghost slipped through the floor boards, never to be seen again. The next morning Lord Hakuseki realized the jewel was stolen and called Judge Ooka, a well known judge, to the seen of the crime. Hakuseki accused Michiko of stealing the jewel, which was discovered in her room. Judge Ooka found out it was a fake, and Seikei was the only one with information on the ghost. The Stolen Jewel Lord Hakuseki was furious when he found out his jewel was stolen. Michiko discovered the jewel in her room. Lord Hakuseki accused her of stealing it saying when she was selling paper to him last night, she persuaded him to present the jewel. Judge Ooka took the jewel that was found in Michiko’s room and smashed it. The jewel shattered into pieces, thus meaning it was a fake. Seikei stood up and told the Judge that Hakuseki was lying. Seikei claimed he saw a jikininki, a ghost, in his room the night before. The ghostly figure was holding the blood red jewel and was taunting him with it. Seikei stomped his feet and the ghost was intimidated by the noise and sunk into the floorboards, never to be seen again. Everyone in the room looked at Seikei like he was a mental patient on the loose. In the end, Michiko was found innocent, and Judge Ooka surprisingly took the innkeeper into custody for extra information. Judge Ooka admired Seikei’s boldness. Also the fact that Seikei was the only one who saw the criminal. Seikei traveled with Ooka and his samurais. Seikei got his own wooden sword and horse. They were off to find the criminal.

The book, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn (1999), is in the criminal fiction genre. In the story, a jewel is stolen from a government official. This leaves a witness and a judge to find the missing jewel. They catch the criminal, but do not retrieve the jewel. Seikei saw the ghost with the stolen jewel that belonged to Lord Hakuseki. At first, the reader didn’t know if the ghost was real or not. The ghost wasn’t real, a man called Tomomi stole it, dressed up as a geisha. The night made it look like a ghost. As well as the jewel found in Michiko’s room. Judge Ooka smashed the jewel found in Michiko’s room, thus the jewel was a fake. Uncertainty and Suspense

Seikei noticed physical features on the ghosts face; a scar by his right eye. The jewel found in Michiko’s room was completely shattered by Judge Ooka. These were two major clues in the novel. The real jewel was with the criminal and Seikei had an idea of what the criminal looked like. Clues

At the end of the stolen jewel case, only the innkeeper was taken into custody by Judge Ooka for extra information. The real suspect was Tomomi who was part of an acting troupe. Seikei and Judge Ooka traveled to the city of Edo. Judge Ooka has a power of sensing and feeling things near by. He tracked the suspect to the city of Edo, in a local theatre. They went to a show that evening about the 47th Ronan when they arrived to the city of Edo. It was hard for Seikei to tell who had the scar on their face that was on the ghost’s face since they were all wearing makeup. At the end of the long show, Judge Ooka left Seikei to find out who the criminal was. Seikei met a boy named Kazuo, who was the costume designer of the small troupe. He had asked him about the suspect’s appearance. Kazuo told him he was a man called Tomomi, who spent his time in bars after a show. Seikei and Kazuo went hunting for Tomomi and confronted him at a local bar. Seikei interrogated Tomomi, but then they started fighting. The three were thrown out of the bar. Later, Seikei questioned about the missing jewel. Tomomi dropped it in a Buddhist Temple offering bowl. Seikei left the jewel and went after Tomomi with Kazuo. Suspects

Tomomi is part of the acting troupe and continues to write scripts as he is not punished for the crime. Seikei and the Judge visit the Shogun and tell the tale of the crime. Seikei will very unlikely reunite with his father and could possibly be a samurai and work with Judge Ooka. Conclusion
